Why I'm skeptical of multiculturalism as a classical liberal:
I'm frequently asked how I can be a classical liberal without supporting multiculturalism. There are many reasons why but let me share with you my basic rationale.
Liberty is not a given. It can only be possible or functional once some institutions are in place. Institutions neither work nor can be sustained by themselves. They need people who value them, find it natural to abide by them, and will defend them when they are attacked. This means that a culture of people who will find these institutions valuable is a necessary requirement for protecting a society in which people can enjoy a substantial range of liberties.
When liberals become ideological, they become reductive, and in turn, they neglect culture and view humans only as economic agents, as producers and consumers.
A multicultural experiment in which large numbers from people of cultures that don't find these institutions valuable or natural to abide by creates a powder keg ready to explode. Self-destruction is not a virtue.
