🔥 Our favorite constraint at Transforming Basketball 🧠 The "Floor is Lava" constraint creates better spacing by forcing players to escape the paint, encouraging smarter positioning and movement without the ball. 😄 Players love it. Coaches see results. 🔁+❤️ Repost and Like this post, and we'll send you the full breakdown. (Valid 72h only)

2-on-2, Only Score off Gets In A Restricted Space Constraining the space leads to harder offensive decision-making, making it more realistic for the offense vs venturing into unrealistic spacings that won't exist in 5-on-5 play.

Many coaches state that their players must be taught something in order to do this. But does this align with common sense and what actually happens when watching them play?

We love using Cat and Mouse 1-on-1 with beginners! Great way to mix dribbling and finishing into the same SSG with an appropriate level of challenge. Learn the constraints for using this SSG from Transforming Clinician Kerri Kuzbyt.

Here is a key constraint detail for running gets: must be one foot on or inside the 3PT line, otherwise it's a turnover. Coaches - why do you think we use this constraint?

Yes. Mine lost possession all over the shop at first. Once it clicked the floor opened up. Cheap drill, big return.

Absolutely, and then the offense can choose to shoot the ball if the defense decide to go under

Offensive players on each wing & point. Defender under the rim. Rolls a ball to one of the offensive players, he has to recover & play 1-on-1 to a score or rebound. Rotated R to L. I did a lot of the 4-man shell drills from Knight to work help and recover & basline rotation.

Great stuff! And then I would consider changing the scoring system depending on what I want to work on. Perhaps scoring the defense for stops. or rewarding the defense even more if they get a stop related to the team's principles of play. eg, get a stop while forcing weak

Specificity is the right lever, and most coaches skip it because narrowing a constraint feels like cheating. Discovery costs twice though: practice time, and the player's willingness to be visibly wrong in front of everybody. How much of that second cost do you put on the room?

Hi, coach! I think this is where it's important to build a culture of trust so that players feel safe to fail in front of the group.

There is a big difference between an automatic pass and cut and an "opportune" pass and cut that is not scripted by the offense. Scripted pass and cut does not put youth players in the best situations to become more skillful, as they replicate a pattern as opposed to learning how to actually play.
