I will absolutely not “dial it back” when it comes to the sexual abuse of children, especially in the classroom - public, private, or charter, it doesn’t matter. But there is a seriously systemic problem in DCPS. It’s not isolated incidents, it’s a pattern of misconduct.
Um, as a frequent critic of DCPS, I am going to have to say lets dial it back. DA non withstanding and where one is to many, it was one, one out of 8000. CHildren are far safer in schools than in scouting, or churches. 1-2

Any teacher who sexually abuses a child in a school is the lowest form of scum. There is no excuse, no gray area, and there should be no second chance.
Teachers and staff are trusted with the safety and care of other people’s children. That trust is sacred. Anyone who uses that position to prey on a student has committed an unforgivable betrayal. They do not belong anywhere near kids. They belong in a cage for as long as the law will allow, and they should never work with children again. (In some cases, I would even suggest capital punishment).
99.9% of educators protect kids every day. The ones who violate that trust are predators, and they deserve the harshest penalties the system can deliver.
I echo Dr. Bernier’s statement made on Friday following the arrest of another DCPS teacher and an ESS substitute this week for sexually preying on children, a deeply troubling pattern of these monsters being placed in classrooms.
However, I’ll take it one step farther…
These are no longer isolated incidents, this is an established failure by our district to protect children, and I’m not afraid to say it.
It’s time for a complete overhaul of the DCPS hiring and vetting system, a demand to ESS to do the same with their contract being put on the line, and a house cleaning of those who have failed in their responsibility to protect students.
I call on our School Board to immediately launch a third-party investigation into our own district practices and policies and to also begin addressing leadership at the highest levels with public-facing transparency and consequences. Their top responsibility is to our children, and they are failing too.
