My thoughts: Islam is incompatible with our Constitutional Republic.

In comments reported by SuperTalk Mississippi (and expanded in a radio interview), MSGOP Chairman Michael Hurst said he respects Benoit’s leadership and will judge Ali by her performance on the bench rather than her religion or appearance. Key statements include:
• “I think we need to just cool our jets a little bit and look at what’s going on. These individuals in Benoit have selected someone to be their local municipal judge to rule over things like traffic tickets, and maybe public drunkenness or things like that. Let’s just see where this goes.”
• “I do not see anything that’s been reported where she is trying to introduce or impose Sharia Law in the big city of Benoit” (said sarcastically). He found no evidence of ulterior motives and noted that people he respects in the legal community described her as a legitimate, credible lawyer.
• “We, as conservatives, believe that the best form of government is the local government. And so, when individuals in Benoit make a choice we disagree with, that’s the citizens of Benoit’s problem that they need to deal with — or it’s their solution, depending on how you look at it.”
He emphasized not rushing to judgment amid the social media reaction and giving the local community the benefit of the doubt, while acknowledging broader historical concerns about radical Islamism in the interview. Benoit officials defended the appointment on qualifications grounds, stating religion is not a disqualifier under Mississippi law.
