This new shielded bitcoin paper doing the rounds is laughable.
It’s Bitcoin showing up to the privacy party wearing Zcash’s coat and insisting it invented the sleeves.
They photocopied the shielded pool, stapled it to a public bulletin board, and called it L1 privacy.
zcash:native already ships the product. This ships a whitepaper, a fee multiple, and a sequel.
Broken down:
1. The door isn’t built.
Transfers inside the pool are specified. Getting BTC in and out is “companion paper coming soon.” That’s not a privacy protocol. That’s a restaurant that published the dessert menu and still hasn’t poured the foundation.
2. Bitcoin doesn’t enforce it.
Bitcoin nodes do not understand notes, nullifiers, or the proofs. They just order bytes. The actual money rules live in indexers. Disagreeing indexers = forked reality. Zcash miners reject invalid shielded txs. Here the base chain will happily confirm a beautifully formatted lie.
3. The anonymity set starts at zero.
Zcash has years of real shielded pool, real wallets, real volume, Ironwood live. This starts empty, optional, and four times more expensive. Optional privacy with a tiny set is a spotlight with extra steps. Timing, amounts, fees and the very public peg-in/peg-out still leak. The paper admits the exits aren’t even claimed to be private.
4. “No operators” is a branding choice.
You still need indexers, wallets that speak shbtc:, proof generators, and a PIPEs primitive described as experimental. That’s not “no trusted parties.” That’s “we outsourced consensus to whoever runs the better spreadsheet.”
5. Witness encryption as the lock.
PIPEs lock a key that only opens if you prove you followed the rules. Cute. Also: new crypto, new failure modes, and the thing that actually moves coins on L1 is still a regular Bitcoin spend with a paper trail at both ends. You didn’t delete the CCTV. You hung a curtain in the middle of the room.
6. Cultural mismatch.
Bitcoin’s whole personality is ossify, don’t touch consensus, every sat is public. This proposal is “please treat our 700-byte fanfic as money, and also pay miners 4× for the privilege.” Maxi reaction write-itself: if you wanted Zcash you should have bought Zcash.
Can’t blame them for trying though 🤣
