I've lived in both BC and Alberta and have gotten to know and care for seriously marginalized and drug-addicted people in both places.
In Vancouver in 2021, I was doing post-release support ministry volunteering with a man who'd been imprisoned for most of his 20s. He struggled with mental health and addiction and was released into an SRO in the Downtown Eastside. Within weeks of his parole expiry, he was using again: the temptations, including cheap, easily-obtainable addictive drugs, were everywhere around him, and there was no mandate he get clean. We reported it to the police and tried to get him help, but nobody other than us was checking in on him. He was even able to consume those drugs in "harm reduction" facilities run by the government. Tragically, he died of an overdose within a few weeks of his release. A human life, extinguished, now just counted as a statistic.
This past summer, a friend of mine here in Calgary experienced a personal tragedy and relapsed into illegal drug use. I eventually called the police and she was taken to hospital for her own protection. Within weeks, she got a space in a publicly-funded rehab centre. She's been there for two months now and is doing well, according to her last texts to me. There's a real chance she gets back out, puts her life back together, and lives a meaningful life for decades to come.
People like Ms. Lore sound very compassionate, but everything they've advocated has failed. It's contributed to terrible human suffering which is all around us. They tell us to stop drawing attention to it. That dignity demands we not take pictures, that we should look away.
They're wrong. Dignity demands we look the problem right in the face. That we treat those people as people who can be supported out of their addiction.
That's what it means to move away from a "harm reduction" system and towards a recovery-oriented system. Alberta is doing it -- not perfectly, but at least they're trying -- and BC should too.
Gavin - don't do this. This is someone obviously sick & extremely vulnerable. Who knows what else she's been through. Fight for what you think is right, but take this down. We can debate the path forward and the tools to use, but this isn't it
Do better here. This is a person.

Alberta closed all safe injection sites which do save lives. And now closed recovery centres - defunded them and closed the major recovery centre in Edmonton
Don’t be like Alberta !
