It got so bad, that I started dreaming about distributed systems in my sleep.
I had a recurring dream where I was a duck farmer, who had to manage feeding, raising, and harvesting the eggs of my ducks.
They would float down streams to get to different areas of my farm, where each area could only deal with so many at a time.
So I made carefully placed weighted queues for my ducks to efficiently manage and increase the egg throughput of my farm, while ensuring every duck was attended to.
I am not making this up.
My subconscious had taken the same primitives I was using to design our Mac infrastructure and turned them into a duck farm
Last June, back when Revyl was only a testing platform for web/mobile, we needed a way to run iOS apps in the cloud.
Cloud simulators were hardly a notion at this point - and we needed something fast, cheap, flexible. So we looked at mac providers, AWS, mac stadium, etc. to build on top of
But it was expensive $$$. Basic napkin math told us the margins would be shit in the long run
So we said f*ck it, and purchased eight macs from BestBuy.
That was the start. A decision that changed the trajectory of our company.
And it was done with hardly any thought. Perhaps if we were smarter and actually thought about the implications of this decision, it may have never happened.
Because I don't think you understand how mind numbingly painful it is to build the orchestration, scheduling, isolation, observability, provisioning, recovery, and tooling for machines designed for a person at a desk.
Then you can finally build a distributed device cloud on top of them.
macOS kernel bugs. Aqua sessions. Apple permissions that masquerade as network failures. VMs inside Macs...
This was supposed to be a means to an end. Instead, it consumed us.
So yes, running a Mac fleet takes a piece of your sanity. That is the deal you make with the devil. But best not to think too hard about it...
