The newest Canadian Housing Survey is out (2024 data), and it doesn't look good for renters. 1. Renting is getting harder to sustain. 40% of renters who recently moved are in unaffordable housing. Consider that figure a preview, because eventually, every renter has to move.

3. 85.5% of young renters are saving to buy a home. No wonder, when their next move is likely to cost more and offer less security. How they're meant to save a down payment while overpaying on rent is a separate question.

Can you afford an extra $560/month on housing? Despite all the talk about rents falling, new @CMHC_ca/@StatCan_eng data shows tenants who have to move from an average two-bedroom in Vancouver can expect to pay $560 more per month to find another place. It's $490 more in Toronto.

That applies to anyone moving for a new job, a kid's school, or away from a bad situation. Rents may be falling in those cities (and rising in others), but there's still an enormous gap trapping renters in long commutes, bad relationships, or substandard housing.

Research from @CAEHomelessness shows that as lower-cost rentals become more expensive, homelessness goes up. Across Canada, there is just a 1.6% vacancy rate for rentals under $750/month, and homelessness has surged over 100% in the last several years. buff.ly/rfBuLZs
