A few things to ponder. Folks in open source are generally builders. They like the craft of making things. They're also people with ideas and they want to explore those ideas. Open source is the perfect outlet for that. Second, there's no forcing people to contribute to a project they don't believe in. If there was only one DE, it would be the same people working on it. Finally, the energy and exchange of ideas between open source projects elevate every project. Without that variety, Linux would be stale, boring, and lacking ideas. It would be no different than Windows.

Last week I was in Shanghai for WAIC 2026 - that was an incredible experience. 🇨🇳 Robotics was everywhere. The venue was packed with endless robot demos and shows. It was fascinating to see, and it really drove home how critical low-latency edge AI deployments are becoming. I gave two talks on llama.cpp: - One at the main event organized by FlagOS / BAAI - Another at a smaller meetup with Dexmal, a robotics company In both talks I focused on how to run llama.cpp efficiently on local hardware so you can deploy multimodal AI agents fully on-device.
