Working on @tempo. Previously at Farcaster and Coinbase.

We need private blockchains for real-world payments. It's been hard to get this right for businesses and users. Most solutions are incompatible with existing markets and infrastructure, which is a non-starter. We've developed Zones, a new privacy model, in partnership with Stripe and other fintechs. They are fully compatible with existing defi markets, wallet infrastructure, card products and more. The key insight that lets us build a simple solution is that users often have a counterparty they're willing to trust in a transaction. Your payroll provider, for example, knows how much you're getting paid. Tempo lets your payroll provider create a private chain where all transactions are confidential between them and their users, while being fully compatible with the rest of the ecosystem. The post below goes into the details of how we made this work.
We're publishing a technical deep dive on Tempo's privacy solution. Tempo Zones are private execution environments that keep transactions and balances private while preserving access to liquidity on mainnet through exchanges, onramps and DeFi. Here's how they work:

Mercator makes your agent more effective by letting it pay for tools and services. Agents perform well above their reasoning levels when they have access to powerful search and compute tools to augment their abilities.

I've intellectually known that software engineering was going to go away but it's just started to feel real. The little dopamine rushes — learning a language, reconfiguring keybindings, upgrading packages or pushing around code on a page to make it easier to read — fade in the rear view mirror, vestiges of a profession no longer needed. The job is more director than architect or builder, and quickly rising to higher levels of abstraction. Agents may do the work of spewing code into files and servers, but building ambitious real world software is hard in a new way. We are responsible for houses we did not create and whose floors we've never truly walked. The longer you've been an engineer in the previous world, the harder the transition is now. But it's time to rewire your brain to appreciate the new ways of how things are going to be built. The ceiling on what we can do is so much higher now.

the most frustrating part of early mmos was repetitive landscapes and quest design, wow was particularly notorious. it feels possible to procedurally generate quests and dungeons (with some human taste and direction) with agentic llms to now build much more compelling worlds.

agents are writing almost all lines of code now. the bottleneck is simply verifying correctness, or what we used to call code review. agents will very soon be able to review and merge their own code. not sure of timeline but feels less than a year away, probably 6 months. the important question is whether an off the shelf harness with a frontier model can just take requirements uttered in english and get the job done at any company or whether each company will need to build high context harnesses to wrap frontier models to help interpret requirements effectively.

agents are already doing this for personal projects + early startups, but blind merge is still dangerous for companies at scale outside of narrow tasks.

autorouting with jev would be a huge breakthrough. so much cost/latency efficiency left on the table because i pick the wrong reasoning level for tasks.
continuing cooking on the auto-router w/ jev, my latest prompt after integrating all gateways "make Jev auto-route across all, taking latency into account w/ TTFT test probe prompts that run every some interval"

A lot of science fiction assumed that intelligence was much higher up the tech tree than spaceflight or robots. Appreciating these books today is harder than it was a few years ago. It's like reading a Golden Age era novel about Martians after the rover landed. You might still like the plot, but it reads more like fantasy than scifi.

Tempo just crossed $2B in monthly stablecoin volume. Why are businesses choosing Tempo? - Earn, which gives you 4-7% on idle balances - Payment Lanes, which let you move money for $.001 - Fast finality, which completes transactions in 0.5s We have more coming soon around privacy, liquidity and onramps, which will make Tempo the best chain for real world money movement.
.@tempo crossed $1B in trailing 30-day stablecoin volume on August 28. It crossed $2B on September 16. ↳ 19 days between the first billion and the second ↳ Trailing 30-day volume sits at $2.08B, 4.2x where it was a month ago Data: @Dune

truly the end of an era to see shopify move away from react native. back in 2018, we moved coinbase to RN. app quality was worse, but it let us keep teams lean and avoid the platform tax of building twice. also, some of the best engineers i knew were working on making it better and the trendline seemed promising.. fast forward to 2020, and it was hard to tell react native apps apart from native ones. meta, expo, shopify, software mansion, and many others had made the tooling and ecosystem so much better. the absolute killer feature was over-the-air updates. you could ship major updates instantly without app store reviews, which made mobile development as fast and fluid as building for the web. it was a godsend for us, since apple's reviewers were capricious with crypto apps. even coinbase, a licensed exchange, got kicked out of the app store for several weeks. having ota updates meant freedom from the tyranny of the reviewer. by 2024, things got interesting. meta and others were rewriting core parts of their apps in native code for performance, with react native serving as the shell that bound it all together. rn's new architecture was also a really brutal upgrade. we spent weeks on it and got bogged down by dependency and performance issues. it was a pretty heavy tax to pay, and many never made the upgrade. so the gap between fully react native apps and native apps continued to grow. it's the age of llms now, and we chose to build a react native app this year but the choice was not an obvious one anymore. the ota part is still very valuable, but the platform tax is dropping every day with agents, and it seems feasible to have fast-moving, lean teams that can build for both ios and android. sad to see, but react native usage will probably reduce slowly over the next few years.

Multiplayer agents - both in the form of "have your agent call my agent" and "shared agent in a group chat" - are incredibly powerful collaboration primitives. Very cool to see Instinct building out consumer experiences with them!
Introducing our Trusted Person network powered by our new Instinct-to-Instinct communication protocol. Your Instinct can now talk to other Instincts to coordinate plans on your behalf. Getting people together often involves a lot of back-and-forth: finding a time, working out the details, and following up when plans change. Instincts can now work with each other to help handle that coordination. For example: - Coordinating plans with your spouse - Planning a weekend trip with friends, including dates and arrival times - Scheduling time with colleagues and other collaborators - Hosting events with 10s or 100s of people - Organizing recurring plans like tennis, book clubs, or weekly dinners Disclaimer: Your Instinct will only be able to communicate with those in your Trusted Person network. This is the group of people who are closest to you: - Spouse - Older children and parents - Colleagues and trusted professional relationships - Small local businesses The Trusted Person network is currently available to our early access group and will be slowly rolled out across the user base over the next 24-48 hours.

Our ai spend and token use jumped up when fable + sol came out in July. So we built observability tools to give engineers better visibility into token spend and efficiency. Within a few days, spend dropped by 30% while token usage stayed roughly flat.

What drove the change? we made it very easy to access the data and get weekly reports, and people self optimized to: 1. use lower reasoning levels 2. use daily limits of certain models efficiently 3. in some narrow cases, use simpler models like luna qualitatively, people who made the biggest spend changes reported no change in quality of output. the hard part was actually getting spend data from all the model providers so we could generate accurate dashboards like the ones below.

that said, our observability is still quite primitive. getting into query level analytics like time to run, slowest queries, most expensive queries, subagent costs etc are all going to be very important as models scale and get more capable and token hungry.

Adoption among the best engineers I know tends to happen around ~3 months before takeoff is clearly visible in these charts. Most of them shifted to Claude Code in Nov 25 and then rotated over to Codex in Apr 26.
OpenAI still taking share while Anthropic likely reaccelerating. And open source is growing even faster.

Tempo's goal is to increase the velocity of money in this brave new world. We're building the base layer: a chain that can reach tens of thousands of transactions per second, at a fraction of a cent, so that money can move at the speed of agents. Join us.
Between wallets for agents with @link (and @privy), MPP, Tempo, MCP, Stripe CLI, Agentic Commerce Suite, sandboxes, OpenRouter, Metronome/metered billing, Radar and distillation/token fraud, it turns out that "the economic infrastructure for AI" implicates a lot. Pretty much every layer of the Stripe stack is changing, and it’s a very good time to join if you want to build high-scale software that facilitates the practical deployment of this new intelligence.

the evidence is very strongly in favor of getting your apob to < 60 when you are young, especially if you have a family history of heart disease the advice people get lags the evidence which is a shame because statins and pcsk9 inhibitors are simply and relatively inexpensive
Yes! The earlier you start getting cholesterol down, the longer you'll live. One way we know this is by comparing people who have low LDL for genetic reasons to people in trials: people who have low LDL for life basically have consistent treatment for longer, and live longer.
