Inaugurating the World Maritime Day celebrations at Le Méridien, Kochi, organized by the Maritime Board, I outlined our strategic roadmap for Mission Samudra-transforming Keralam’s 600 km coastline into a premier port-driven economic gateway. As I emphasized today: “The sea is not our border; it is the door to our future.” 🚢 Keralam’s maritime legacy runs deep—from ancient Muziris trading with 31 nations to Vizhinjam situated just 10 nautical miles off international shipping routes, positioning us to compete directly with transshipment giants like Singapore and Colombo. By seamlessly connecting our 2 international ports, 18 minor and inland ports, and 44 rivers, we can shift up to 50% of heavy road transport to coastal waterways at a fraction of the cost, while expanding Cochin Airport’s cargo capacity to 5 lakh tonnes. Flagship developments in Kochi will include India’s premier Oceanarium, an International Maritime Museum curated to world standards, and a Global Convention Centre near Cochin Port in partnership with CIAL, accompanied by dedicated cruise terminals at Kochi and Kozhikode. To build a complete maritime ecosystem, we are setting up an Admiralty Court and Maritime Law Academy in Kochi, supported by specialized industrial parks for dental and medical device manufacturing and agro-food value addition. Marking this institutional shift, June 19 will be observed annually as Keralam Maritime Day, supported by an annual Maritime Conclave and comprehensive accountability reporting on jobs and investments.
