Verasight data was featured in a new story from @Newsweek by associate news editor @bySamStevenson: "Trump's $5,000 Check Promise Fails To Land With Voters, New Poll Finds." A national Verasight poll of 1,500 U.S. adults, fielded September 16 to 21, found that 33% of Americans said President Trump's pledge of $5,000 to every adult citizen if Republicans keep control of Congress makes them less likely to vote Republican, compared with 15% who said it makes them more likely. Verasight CEO Ben Leff commented on the findings: "The clearest takeaway we see from the data is that the promise doesn't appear to be an effective way to persuade voters." He also noted the limits of what the poll measures. "We need to be careful about interpreting this as 33 percent of Americans actually changing their vote because of this promise," he said. "Disliking a proposal and actually changing your vote because of it are two very different things." Read the full article here: newsweek.com/trump-5000-chec…

How do AI-moderated interviews compare to traditional surveys? We collaborated with Outset on a rigorous experiment in which 3,160 people were randomly assigned to either a traditional survey or an AI-moderated interview. Verasight CEO Ben Leff and Outset CEO @AaronLCannon walk through what we found and how AI-moderated interviews can be used with survey research. Live Wednesday, September 30 at 12pm PT / 3pm ET. Congratulations to Julia Wolfson and Cindy Leung on a new article in @AmJPrevMed, published with Verasight survey data. "Public perceptions of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans" examines how US adults view the guidelines released in January 2026, including whether they trust the science behind them and find them useful for decision-making. In a nationally representative, web-based survey of 1,000 US adults, 50% did not trust that the recommendations in the new guidelines were based on sound scientific evidence, while 35% did. Respondents were split on usefulness, with 41% finding the guidelines useful and 44% not. Opinions differed significantly by education, household income, and political party. Congratulations to David Doherty, @conor_m_dowling, Michael Miller, and Jeff Milyo on a new article in American Politics Research, published with Verasight survey data. "Partisanship and Voting Rule Trade-offs" examines whether partisan differences about voting rules come from genuine disagreement about the trade-off between maximizing turnout and preventing ineligible votes. Across two pre-registered survey experiments, participants were asked to make trade-offs between a pair of voting systems. One system would entirely prevent ineligible votes, randomly varying turnout rates among eligible voters; the other would yield universal turnout among eligible voters, but result in some randomly varied number of ineligible voters casting ballots. Some participants were also provided with cues signaling which party endorsed which system. The results suggest that the effects of divergent partisan cues, rather than differing priorities regarding maximizing eligible turnout and minimizing ineligible turnout, are the more likely explanation for the partisan gaps found in the observational data. Congratulations to @itserinfitz and @profgoose on a new article in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, published with Verasight survey data. "Who considers, who owns? Multi-study evidence on the behavioral process of cryptocurrency adoption in the United States" studies the step most research on cryptocurrency overlooks, the point where someone would consider owning it but does not yet. Across three nationally representative samples of US adults, roughly one in five respondents do not own cryptocurrency but would consider owning it. Conservative political ideology and technological optimism related more strongly to considering, while stock ownership and disruptive orientations related more strongly to owning. Congratulations to Julia Fine, @JoshEttinger, Teresa Myers, Yuan Yue, Lisa Patel, John Kotcher, and Edward Maibach on a new article in Environmental Research: Health, published with Verasight survey data. "Optimizing health professionals’ climate advocacy messages" tests which message frames work best when health professionals communicate about climate change and health. In a 2 × 2 factorial experiment plus a no message control group, the authors tested four versions of a brief fictitious yet realistic news article to answer two questions with regard to six possible communication outcomes (e.g. support for fossil fuels, support for renewable energy, trust in health professionals as sources of climate change information): (1) Are do-more-good frames (about the need to use more renewable energy) or do-less-bad frames (about the need to phase out fossil fuels) more effective, and (2) Are gain frames (about health benefits) or loss frames (about health harms) more effective? In addition, they surveyed a cohort of health professionals who advocate for climate action to test their willingness to use each of these message frames. The authors found that reading any of the four versions of the news article led to a small increase in trust in health professionals as a source of information on climate change relative to the control group, and the stop/loss and start/gain framed articles led to a small decrease in participants’ support for fossil fuels. The health professionals surveyed had a strong preference for gain-framed messages; however, many also mentioned a sense of duty to warn audiences of the health harms of climate change. Congratulations to Brian Hicks, Amanda Price, @blairjwhitt, Paula Goldman, and Mark Ilgen on a new article in Drug and Alcohol Dependence, published with Verasight survey data. "Links between cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome symptoms and drug use, mental health problems, antisocial behavior, and personality in a national survey of adults in the United States" examines how adults reporting symptoms of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome differ from other adults who use cannabis. Across the National Firearms, Alcohol, Cannabis, and Suicide survey of 7,034 US adults, those reporting symptoms of the syndrome reported the highest rates and greatest variety of drug use among people who use cannabis, along with more depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and chronic pain than those who used cannabis daily without those symptoms.
