On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, sworn officers and civilian staff at the Victoria Police Department are encouraged to reflect on our responsibility to build respectful and meaningful relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people; to learn from Indigenous knowledge and perspectives; and to support culturally safe, equitable, and respectful policing. We recognize that the colonial establishment of the police department in 1858 and the role of police through Canada's Residential School system has caused deep and lasting harm. Today, we stand with Canadians to honour Residential School Survivors, their families and communities, and those who never returned home. And we remain committed to strengthening relationships with Indigenous people on the traditional territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking peoples, whom we are grateful to learn from and serve.
