Question: can it become better than CRISPR?
- New natural (and synthetic) enzymes almost never 'beat' a mature CRISPR platform on day one.
- So... highly unlikely as a wholesale replacement (soon), unless I am wrong and Anthropic heavily invests into it (which I doubt).
- Off-target effects are not unique to Cas9: they show up in other editing tools too.
Likely use:
same path as other mined gene-editing systems. If ART can be programmed, biotech companies will test it as another tool for diseases caused by gene mutations, and possibly use it another modality in the toolbox (I'd say in 3-5 years).
