Last Wednesday, Ottessa Moshfegh’s Plimpton Prize–winning story “Bettering Myself” found itself at the center of a lawsuit filed against a Florida college by one of its faculty members. Vinita Prabhakar, the English professor in question, is suing for wrongful termination after being fired for teaching the story, alongside works by Hemingway and Carver, in a unit on unlikable narrators. For @TheFP Great Americans series, I wrote about Harvey Fite, a favorite artist of mine whose life was something of a Randian tale. He spent nearly 40 years building a seven-acre stone sculpture-- and eventually died in a tragic accident at the site of the sculpture, united forever with his masterpiece.
