some years ago i got into an argument with a content creator who attempted to ridicule me over tarot cards, mocking me by saying, “do you *actually* believe those cards tell the future?” i said, “of course they do, you idiot.” i pulled a card: Death. “You will die some day. will you not?” he tried laughing it off, but looked stupid, because he was. i explained that these are random cards and random stories that inevitably will play out in everyone’s lives. but pulling random cards helps people analyze their own lives from different perspectives, which can be remarkably helpful for processing the world around you: no magic required. it bothers me how quickly people are to box a practice into a type of person- you can be a scientist who believes in god. you can be an empiricist who uses divination. the two are not mutually exclusive. people who spend their entire lives trying to fit themselves into a copy-paste image to project to the world will never truly reach the complexity they wish to project.
