He is far and away the worst governor in the history of this country!
California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing renewed criticism over his handling of the state, as polling shows a divided electorate and fresh census data points to a sustained population exodus from the Golden State.
A Wisevoter-reported survey of 625 registered California voters, conducted September 21 to 24, 2026, put Newsom’s approval rating at 45 percent, with 46 percent disapproving. The poll found 56 percent of independent respondents dissatisfied with the governor, and rural Northern California voters approving of him at just 28 percent, even as 74 percent of Democrats backed his performance.
On migration, U.S. Census Bureau estimates for 2025 show Los Angeles County continuing to lead the nation in residents leaving for other states. According to figures compiled by Outkick, roughly 174,000 people moved out of major California counties between 2024 and 2025 alone, while nearly 1.7 million residents have left the state since 2020. Separate state Department of Finance data put net domestic out-migration from California at 288,600 people in 2025.
Newsom’s office disputes the narrative on homelessness, pointing to preliminary data showing a 9 percent drop in unsheltered homelessness in 2025, which it called the largest decline in more than 15 years. Reporting from the San Francisco Chronicle noted that despite the one-year decline, the number of people living on the streets or in vehicles remains well above 2019 levels, when Newsom took office.
The governor, widely seen as weighing a 2028 presidential run, has not responded directly to the “worst governor” characterization. His critics and supporters remain split on whether his record reflects mismanagement or resilience under national economic and immigration pressures beyond his control.
