89 years ago today, The Hobbit landed on bookshelves and introduced the world to Bilbo Baggins. J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit was published in Britain on September 21, 1937, by George Allen & Unwin. The first printing was only 1,500 copies, with Tolkien himself providing the illustrations and designing the dust jacket. By December, every copy was gone. The story itself started in a much less dramatic place. Tolkien was grading exam papers when he came across a blank page and wrote, “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” He later said he didn’t even know why he wrote it. Before the publisher took a chance on it, Stanley Unwin handed the manuscript to his 10-year-old son Rayner to read. Rayner liked it, wrote a favorable report, and was paid one shilling for the job. The Hobbit became such a success that the publisher wanted more stories about hobbits. Tolkien started writing again, and years later that became The Lord of the Rings. Nick Saban spent 17 seasons at Alabama, won six national championships there, retired in 2024, and pretty much went straight from the sideline to College GameDay. For years we saw the serious coach pacing the sideline. Now Pat McAfee has him trying giant ribs, sandwiches and whatever else shows up on that desk, and Saban just goes along with it. We’re getting to see a completely different side of him now that he isn’t coaching. Did you ever think we would see Nick Saban this relaxed after retirement?

The level of incompetence staring us in the face here is overwhelming. A Detroit funeral home accidentally cremated the wrong woman. Somehow it got even worse. Her family showed up for an open-casket viewing and found another woman lying there wearing their mother’s clothes and wig. Think about how many times somebody had to handle paperwork, identify a body, prepare it, dress it and put it in that casket without realizing they had the wrong person. How does every single safeguard fail like that?

Were these people actually trying to be serious?🤣😭💀 ABC premiered Batman on January 12, 1966, with Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. William Dozier and Howie Horwitz produced the series, and for the first two seasons ABC actually gave us Batman twice a week. Wednesday usually left Batman and Robin in some ridiculous death trap and Thursday we came back to see how they got out of it. It ran for three seasons and 120 episodes and became an immediate hit. Now think about what we were watching. Batman and Robin slid down Batpoles into the Batcave. Commissioner Gordon had a bright red Batphone. Every villain had some elaborate plan that required capturing Batman instead of just getting rid of him. Fights had POW! BIFF! and ZAP! flying across the screen. And Adam West stood there in gray tights, a blue cape and a mask with eyebrows painted on it delivering every line like the entire future of Gotham City depended on him. That's what made it so good. The adults could see how absurd the whole thing was. Kids just saw Batman and Robin fighting the Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman. Somehow it worked for everybody. Batman only lasted from 1966 to 1968, but more than half a century later people still know that Batmobile, that theme song and Adam West's Batman the second they see him. Happy birthday to Adam West. Same Bat-time. Same Bat-channel.

Most of us have worn cotton our whole lives and probably never watched it come off the plant. I'm from Texas, so we know a thing or two about cotton around here. Cotton grows inside a green boll. As it ripens, the boll turns brown, splits open and the white fiber pushes out. What you are seeing here is that fiber being pulled right out of the dried boll. Cotton in the U.S. is harvested by machines now. Some machines use rotating spindles to twist the cotton out, while others strip the open bolls from the plant. Think about how many cotton shirts, towels and pairs of jeans you have owned. It all starts right there. Have you ever picked cotton by hand?

Imagine flying a helicopter over the open ocean and thinking you spotted a massive whale. 🚁 That’s exactly what happened to this pilot cruising high above the water, pointing down at a dark, elongated shadow in the distance. As the helicopter zoomed in closer, the shape became impossibly defined. 🌊 It wasn’t marine life at all it was a giant military submarine cruising right along the ocean surface! 🤯 Definitely not the kind of "whale" watching tour anyone signed up for. 🐋

Paramount has been making movies since 1912, and that studio name has been tied to Hollywood for more than a century. Now Paramount is also in a legal fight with California over its Warner Bros. Discovery deal, and reports are raising the possibility that the company could eventually leave the state. So if Paramount actually leaves California, this would be more than a company changing addresses. You would be talking about one of the studios that helped build Hollywood becoming another part of Hollywood history that isn't actually in Hollywood anymore. If Paramount actually leaves California, who gets the blame, Paramount or California?

This started with Macklemore. He was removed from the remaining dates after several venues reportedly said they wouldn't host the shows if he stayed on the tour. Ed Sheeran says he tried to work out a compromise, but the decision ultimately came down to the promoters and venues. Now Aaron Rowe, Finneas, Lukas Graham and Sheeran's touring band Beoga have all walked too. Whatever you think about the politics behind it, this went from one artist being removed to basically everybody heading for the exit in a matter of days. Talk about a domino effect.
