There's not enough time in the world to counter all "arguments" from first principles, we know socialism is bad, so its fine to dismiss it
I don’t like the practice of just hurling “champagne socialist” or “luxury beliefs” at left-wing people with rich parents, instead of engaging with the arguments. There’s nothing intrinsically problematic in being left-wing and having such a background.

If you optimize for non-empirical argumentation you are gonna end up becoming a Third Worlist Maoist EA, which ironically is what a lot of "debators" end up becoming.

Something funny about representing a character as religious when she is explicitly a snarky atheist in a world where the Goddess is almost confirmed to exist

Its also a straight up lie to claim that "Catholic priests abuse at a lower rate than public school teachers" lol.
e-caths loving having their heads in the sand (or up their asses) about clerical abuse and the fact the big scandal wasn't the abuse itself as much as the fact there were decades worth of coverup and continuing enabled abuse that went all the way to implicating the vatican

The numbers they keep sharing are basically nonsense, most clergy have zero unsupervised exposure to children vs the average teacher is in charge of teaching thousands of students in their career. The probability that a random priest at Sunday school will abuse *your* kid is way higher

its wild you could basically cure any doomer by getting them to train a model to do a single task near perfectly.
“Scott Alexander isn’t saying AI feels pain, he’s just saying it might so we shouldn’t ‘torture’ them.” Yeah, and my iPhone ‘might’ feel pain so it shouldn’t be recycled when I upgrade. 😂 When saying AI might have subjective experiences, that ‘might’ is doing a lot of work!

Its hard to explain this in just words, but like when you are playing whack a mole with the model weights, its hard to take the idea that it has consciousness or desires or agency seriously

The Median adult in Maine is 53 years old. The Median voter is >60 years old and was in school the same time as Senator Collins.
Mainers will reelect this woman and then a couple years later wonder why they’re represented by someone being wheeled around like Feinstein or McConnell

"Notice the utter lack of engagement with scientology's arguments"
Replying to @perrymetzger
Notice the utter lack of engagement with even a single one of Scott’s arguments. This sort of “proof by sneer”, which I previously had associated only with progressive NPCs, is typical of Perry on this topic.

once again, this should lower your confidence in how real doomerism is, they are just obsessed with Terminator irrespective of the facts.

its funny when its libs believing fake stuff these guys are all "wow we need people to hold hands, and share facts" or some shit, but then when its conservatives believing fake stuff its "of course these evil monsters are lying devils, string them up from the lampposts"
I've stayed far away from the radioactive Cornell discourse, but I do want to make one meta-observation. I spend a lot of time in different corners of the internet, and the two 'sides' of the Cornell story are living in separate universes. Entirely different facts, wildly separate narratives. Spend time in different social media spaces and it's like they're describing two totally distinct incidents. There's almost no shared reality whatsoever, and that strikes me as really dangerous.

Paying rich Boomers $40 to 62k a year while the nation approaches a debt crisis is a "frivolous" welfare program. So is Medicare. Conservatives tried for generations to protect senior privileges, while cutting spending elsewhere. Did it work? No. Senior benefits must be cut.
Taxes should not be increased on Gen Z and Millennial Americans to fund Social Security for Baby Boomers. Social Security Benefits should not be cut for Baby Boomers. The federal government should spend less money and frivolous welfare programs should be heavily cut.

Democrats say they want to win the Maine Senate seat, yet they refuse to nominate a recipient of the Senator Joseph I. Lieberman Award. Curious!
INBOX: "No Labels today awarded its Problem Solver Seal to U.S. Senator Susan Collins of Maine, one of the movement’s longest-standing congressional partners and the recipient of its inaugural Senator Joseph I. Lieberman Award."
