This day on 6th October 1985, Pc Keith Blakelock was stabbed over 90 times and murdered by a rioting mob on the Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham. Many other officers were seriously injured.
He had been a school teacher, but decided that he could help the community more by being a police officer.
I joined the Met from the Royal Navy in October 1980. Keith was on a parallel recruit's course to me at Hendon in North London. Within three months of leaving Hendon, I was attending a riot in Brixton and faced extremely violent mobs.
The day after Keith's murder, I started my posting from Detective Training School as a new Detective Constable at West Ham C.I.D. It was a Monday, and news in those days traveled slowly. Only later that morning, did I hear about his murder and the horrific circumstances. It was rumoured that had the rioting continued another day, that rioters would have been thrown off the balconies on the Broadwater Farm Estate to their death by enraged police officers.
There was a Met wide appeal to the public that day for all knives and similar weapons to be handed in at local police stations for forensic comparisons. A large number were handed in at West Ham by the local residents.
Four years after the murder, I was posted to Tottenham police station as a new Detective Sergeant. My welcome pack included an introduction to the Broadwater Farm. It's primary recommendation was to ensure I had had an escape route in case things went wrong.
In 1998, I was to return there as a Detective Inspector after spending eight years on the Counter Terrorist Command.
Many years ago, there was a framed photograph of Keith on the wall in the canteen at Hornsey police station where he was first posted.
R.I.P. Keith. I really hope that one day Justice will triumph and your murderers will be found and convicted.🙏
