We also quietly shipped a brand-new zite.com yesterday I’ll miss parts of our old brand, but it was time for some of the overly playful illustrations to go Zite is increasingly being used for mission-critical work, and we want the brand to reflect that Building business software has historically been complicated, slow, and clunky. Building in Zite should be fun So while the brand is growing up a bit, we’ll keep finding ways to bring the playfulness into the product!

We’ve shipped an important set of Zite updates to give more control over how people sign in to your apps. Fully brand the sign-in experience with your own logo, copy, colors, emails, and custom auth domain. Also new: • A User field to connect records directly to people in your workspace • Created by and Updated by fields to track who changed each record • Log in as user, so admins can see an app exactly as a specific user sees it • Custom Access Rules to check sign-ups and sign-ins against your CRM, roster, internal API, or another source of truth We’re building Zite to be the best place to create secure client portals, internal dashboards, and any app where identity and permissions really matter. The updates keep coming.

We’ve been heads down rebuilding the foundations of @zite for several months. Two weeks ago, that new foundation went live. It was a massive update (over 250k lines of code...), and will transform what our customers can achieve with our products. I’ll be sharing more of what it unlocks over the next few weeks. Here’s part 1: 🏠 Workspaces 2.0 Your database, apps, forms, people, and shared building blocks now live together in one workspace. Having built a no-code platform (including a database product) I know first hand that many of the tech decisions made pre-AI are the wrongs ones post. Airtable is a great product, but I’d guess they struggled to capitalize on the huge wave of AI builders because they didn’t have the right foundation. Part of why I’m so bullish on @zite is because I know all our tech is built AI first. All the best parts of no-code without the trade offs!

Airtable is being acquired by Bending Spoons for 1.285B. A few thoughts from seeing how ~100k teams use Airtable alongside our products: At roughly 2.7x its $480M in ARR, Airtable is either very expensive or an absolute steal. It’s expensive if Airtable fails to adapt. AI-generated software will erode horizontal SaaS, per-seat pricing will keep weakening, and customers will gradually replace it with software built specifically for them. Bending Spoons is betting that Airtable’s revenue will remain durable through that transition. But with the right execution, I think there is a 10x upside case. Teams use Airtable to run important operational processes where data, permissions, integrations, security, and reliability matter. That gives it a deeply embedded position inside hundreds of thousands of organizations. Bending Spoons now has two very different paths to choose from. The first is the PE playbook: reduce product development, increase prices, and improve margins. Airtable is sticky enough that this could work for a few years. But it would be bad for customers and a huge waste of the opportunity. The second is the ambitious path: evolve Airtable from a tool where teams organize work into a platform that can help perform it. If Airtable can add an intelligence layer that understands how organizations operate and safely executes work, it could accelerate both its growth and the value it provides customers. Airtable tried moving in this direction with Hyperagent, but it felt too little, too late, and disconnected from the core product. My guess is that building this into a product as mature as Airtable is simply hard. Its custom database and interface builder were created for a different era of software, before isolated databases became easy to provision and LLMs could generate custom interfaces and workflows. If Bending Spoons takes the ambitious path, it has a significant technical challenge ahead. I hope it does, and makes Airtable much better for its customers. Or maybe they’ll see @zite coming and decide to throw in the towel 😉

Earlier this month, 30 local government leaders walked into a sheriff’s office in upstate New York. By the end of the day, they were demoing working software they built themselves. No keynotes.
