A long time ago, we used to go to bar trivia all the time — we were good at it and won prizes every week. One of those prizes was a Lagunitas mason jar that I used as my daily driver for everything. 14 years of water, protein shakes, old fashioneds. A couple weeks ago we had a party here and some friends made a pitcher of Cherry Bounce and brought it over. After several of those I made myself a boring old fashioned with my wife’s homemade boozy cherries and as I picked it up off the counter it escaped from my hands and onto the hardwood floor. Did the mason jar simply break? No. It shattered into smithereens. The pieces went everywhere. But this is not daddy’s first rodeo with spilled cocktails. Despite being absolutely shitfaced I got on the floor and cleaned it up and the show went on. And the floor felt sticky for days until I got out a big boy mop and redid it. Ever since this happened I have been filled with a background sadness every time I open the cabinet and have to choose between some bullshit Collins highballs or even my precious Mexican handblown tumblers I added to our wedding registry without my wife’s knowledge. In the wise words of my coding agent- I did not realize how load-bearing my Lagunitas mason jar was to my mental health. My wife suggested grabbing a stool and checking the highest shelf in our kitchen cabinet to see if I could replace it. Replace it. Can you replace a Michelangelo with a kindergartner’s bring-home? I can try. Here’s to the good times, most of which did not make it to long term memory.

Then, when film started to move from analog film to digital, I became more interested in that aspect of it. The visual-effects workflow for many years has included machine learning, so I can write pretty shitty Python scripts and stuff like that. “With convolutional neural networks, which were the precursors to what the transformer can do, which is much more computation simultaneously, you would do things like look at what’s called a tensor. That’s the numerical translation of a visual image in numbers, like the batch number, the frame number and the red, green and blue values of each pixel in each frame. It’s just that simple. That numeric is called a tensor. “You’d use a convolutional neural network to identify patterns that reveal what’s called edge detection or feature extraction, which is identifying patterns well enough to know, this is where the window ledge is, so we can more easily take the green-screen image out and replace it with something. “That was familiar to me early on because, prior to Artists Equity, I had a small visual-effects company. I’ve worked with GPUs a lot too. The visual-effects guys said, ‘Hey, you should see. There are a couple: Google and this other company, OpenAI, are doing really interesting stuff with transformers in video.’ “I’ve learned that I can actually just call up and go, ‘Hey, it’s Ben Affleck. Can I come see what you’re doing?’ Sometimes people say yes, to my astonishment.”

I feel awkward about being in New York. I don’t like it here, but when my grandfather died, only direct family members could take over his rent controlled lease in Tribeca, and I was the only one willing to live with him and take it. The rest of my family wants to live in the Midwest. Now, I feel like I have to hold onto this loft, which means I have to maintain permanent residence here. I don’t want to be here but it feels like such a waste and a disrespect to my grandfather to move out of a 3500 sqft loft in Tribeca. It’s an amazing deal—just over $300/mo. Me taking over the lease was this whole planned operation. I lived with him for a few years before he passed to be eligible to get the apartment. The problem is that I don’t want to be here. There’s basically no way for me to transfer it without like getting married. I’d love to be able to pass it down to my kids if they wanted it. If I don’t live here, though, the landlord will find out and I’ll lose it. Many people would love to be in this situation. I know it’s a blessing, but I don’t know what to do.
