Japan just burned almost 100 billion dollars defending the yen and the thing is already back at 160. CT is posting best August since 2017 like the funding side of this rally cannot break. Tokyo spent about ¥15.4 trillion from late July through 26 Aug, even dragged the US in for a rare joint yen buy, and by Friday USD/JPY was 160 again. More than half the rescue is gone. Warsh told Jackson Hole inflation still has work to do, September hike odds jumped from the mid 30s toward 56%, and BTC faded from 81k back to the high 77s. The tape everyone is celebrating was Treasury long-end buybacks plus a monster short squeeze. It was not QE. Cheap yen is still sitting under a lot of that risk. If BOJ hikes or they are forced to defend again and the yen rips, those loans get expensive in a hurry and people sell what is liquid. Last time that unwind hit, in August 2024, BTC and ETH ate drawdowns up to 20%. Meanwhile friday’s flow print was the tell. BTC ETFs snapped a nine day, 3b inflow streak with about 202m out. Ether funds took another 102m and kept a 10 day streak. Same hawkish day, different bid. Saylor posts We’re Back and CT treats that as the story. Fine. I want to know what happens to 78k if Tokyo actually wins a round vs the yen. Are people sizing this squeeze like the carry is dead, or just hoping Japan stays quiet until September?
