Just spoke with Damar Hamlin’s uncle. Damar was originally on 100% oxygen and is now down to 50%. Says the family is hanging in there. He thanked Bills fans, and Bengals fans and asked for continued prayers

As a physician, this is a very good sign of progress in his condition. He also got medical attention, CPR and Defibrillation right away. Let's all pray he will fully and completely recover soon.

Vent nurse here: for context this sounds like they are following standard practice for weaning patients off of ventilators. It is a GOOD THING. Tracking right along. Matter of fact, we may be a bit ahead of schedule ❤️🙏

This means they are trying to ween him off from oxygen support in steps. Hopefully this means by tomorrow, he is 100% off of oxygen support and breathing on his own. This is a good thing if he's at 50% oxygen support now.

for those wondering, room air is 21% oxygen. When people are on ventilators (breathing machines), we as physicians, can increase the percentage of oxygen being delivered in the hopes of increasing the oxygen delivered to his tissues. This is a positive sign

What no one is talking about is the main concern being how much oxygen loss did he have to the brain. My little sister had a heart attack and a week later we had to pull the plug because there was no activity in the brain. I pray that Damar will come out of this with no issues

Unfortunately mechanical ventilation is extremely complex to summarize in a tweet and this update really does not tell us much. The most important update will be regarding his neurological status as they wean off sedation.

That’s really good to hear! My partner unfortunately passed with Covid had stage 5 kidney failure but he was intubated one time with fluid overload was on 90% on the ventilator dropped down to 70% then 30% until finally weened off and was able to breathe on own. This is positive

What he is likely referencing is a setting on the ventilator called FiO2. For reference, FiO2 of room air is 21%. His decreased FiO2 requirement is reassuring, but this is only one small peice of the clinical picture.

Yes. It is good news. It means that he was having to rely on an oxygen machine for 100% of his oxygen and now that has been reduced by half.

Yes good news! Means he is requiring the machine to do half of what it was required to do for him less than 24 hours ago. Great progress. The titration going quickly like this, means they are probably very optimistic of recovery.

Regardless of his oxygen it’s going to depend on what the brain scans are showing and what level his brain will be able to function. Unless they’ve already determined that won’t be the case. Some parts of the body can recover fast, the brain is not one. Hoping for recovery
