There is a growing wave of SEO tools and thought leadership coming from people who have never actually done SEO.
Fresh perspectives in every industry matter, but the gap that will lead to real problems is this: people who lack the accumulated knowledge of how search actually works will not know what happens when you make a wrong move.
They haven't watched a site tank from a migration gone wrong or seen what happens when you buy links at scale. Both problems I saw firsthand in the last month.
The buyers of these claims are often executives and marketing leaders with minimal SEO experience themselves and don't know enough to ask the right questions.
When someone with no SEO background tells you that you can rank on search and LLMs for competitive keywords with just AI content, it sounds miraculous. Or when they say that visibility on LLMs comes from AI workflows that build Reddit comments, it sounds like a silver bullet. Or when they throw out all technical knowledge of search because "Google search is obsolete."
Implementing these plans will lead to disappointment and tears, as anyone who has been on the wrong side of an algorithm update knows.
SEO and AEO playbooks exist for a reason, and there's a serious risk in doing the thing that sounds too good to be true.
