When I see a book where the author has used another author's character to create their own work, to me, it doesn't feel right. Even if legally it is fine, as author copyrights end 70 years after their death, so taking a character like Sherlock Holmes or "continuing" a story by Jane Austen, is legal, I personally don't feel like it's the author's. I guess it could be a like a "remake" or a "reboot" as they call it in television, but the voice of the original author and how they created their character, is never the same. I don't mind if the "new" character was a relative of an old character, such as Helms or Watson. I know there is fan fiction out there, and when those get published, people get in an uproar because it's fan fiction, and it's usually about something that is still copyrighted. Just because you change the name of a character, doesn't mean it's your character. It's someone elses.
Now, some of you may agree and some don't, and that's why I am sharing this with you. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this subject.
I remember there was an uproar over the Fifty Shades of Gray series as being fan fiction, and even though I read the book, I personally didn't think it was written very well, and the author didn't do enough research on the lifestyle of Gray.
