This heatwave is not normal. The environmental crisis is becoming stronger, harsher and more visible than before drying water sources, destroying crops, weakening livestock and threatening the food security of entire communities. What we are seeing today should awaken society to the reality that climate change is already here. The greatest injustice is that those who have contributed the least to pollution are often the ones who suffer first and suffer most. Rural families, smallholder farmers, children and vulnerable communities produce very little of the emissions driving this crisis, yet they are paying the highest price through hunger, water scarcity, lost livelihoods and worsening health. We cannot continue treating climate action as a future conversation. Governments, businesses, communities and individuals must act with urgency protecting ecosystems, investing in climate resilience and holding major polluters accountable. DID YOU KNOW? Before it became known as ACCESS, our organisation was called the Nakaseke Community Development Initiative - NACODI. Born in rural Nakaseke, NACODI began with a simple but powerful purpose: to stand with vulnerable members of the community, particularly orphans, vulnerable children and people affected by HIV/AIDS. From those humble beginnings grew what we know today as the African Community Centre for Social Sustainability (ACCESS) expanding its work into healthcare, education, economic empowerment and environmental sustainability. Our name has changed. Our work has grown. But the heart of the mission remains rooted in the community. From NACODI to ACCESS - this is where our story began.

Today, we were pleased to welcome a team from Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB), one of our consortium partners in the Breakthrough T1D grant application, to ACCESS in Nakaseke. Their visit focused on conducting institutional due diligence on ACCESS as an implementing partner reviewing our organizational systems, governance, financial and programmatic capacity, and our readiness to effectively deliver our responsibilities under the proposed consortium programme. This is an important step in moving from a shared vision to a strong and accountable partnership. Under the consortium arrangement, ACCESS is expected to contribute to interventions across the T1D programme, while UPMB has a central role in financial management and sub-grant administration. For us, due diligence is more than a compliance exercise. It is an opportunity to demonstrate the systems we have built, the communities we serve, and our commitment to ensuring that resources entrusted to us translate into meaningful change for people living with Type 1 Diabetes in Uganda. We are grateful to the @UPMB_Uganda team for taking the time to visit, engage with our team, and better understand our work on the ground. Strong partnerships are built on trust, accountability and a shared purpose and today was another important step toward building a stronger T1D response in Uganda.
