Following a city investigation, @DoorDash in NYC has agreed with New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to pay $131.5m for underpayments of wages, and late payments, to thousands of drivers, affecting 264,000 workers. Most of this relates to failure to pay for 'idle time' - the time spent between orders - a huge issue for app drivers and couriers in the UK too. So today, @adcu shouts out to @TfL @transportgovuk and @andyburnham to #bemorenewyork, who are showing us how it should be done. And we shout especially loudly to @jreynoldsMP @biztradegovuk who wrote to us recently stating that that workers' rights are enforceable "regardless of the business model" an employer uses, and that where individuals are denied their core rights to the National Minimum Wage, that "HMRC and the Fair Work Agency will not hesitate to take action where breaches occur." ADCU advice to Londoners: don't set foot in a driverless taxi until status of "human safety drivers" clarified. Driverless taxis for hire hit London's streets for the first time today. But who are the “human safety drivers” who will be sitting in the cars during this initial rollout? How were they recruited? Are they licensed private hire drivers? And if so, where does liability sit if there is an accident or a passenger becomes unwell? And if they are not licensed drivers, what qualifications and authority they have to act in that role? ADCU has been asking these questions repeatedly but so far we've had no response from either @transportgovuk @TfL or any of the platform companies @uber @wayve_ai @waymo. We've advising Londoners not to step foot in a driverless taxi until these questions are answered. “TfL requires licensed private hire drivers to pass stringent checks before they are allowed to carry passengers, including medical, safeguarding and regulatory requirements designed to protect the public. So the obvious question is: has that same standard been applied here? If the person sitting in the vehicle is meant to intervene in a safety-critical situation, or deal with a passenger emergency, Londoners need to know whether they have gone through the same licensing and vetting process as every other private hire driver in this city. No licence. No work. No income. That is the reality for private hire drivers trapped in @TfL’s “occupational health” delays. Just a few days ago, @sadiqkhan @mayoroflondon said that the TfL taxi and PHV licensing service had "largely" recovered from the disruption caused by the Sept 2024 cybersecurity incident. Try telling that to Kola Oba, ADCU’s London Branch Equality Rep, passed fit to drive but wrongly caught in this backlog, despite having done everything right, and having sent all his paperwork in in plenty of time. His licence expires today, meaning he cannot earn, pay bills or keep up the rental on the car he needs to survive. Driving is his only job. Meaning as of tomorrow, his income is .... zero. This is not a technical issue. It is a livelihoods crisis. TfL must issue temporary licences immediately to every driver still waiting because of these delays.

Today, @ADCUnion GS, Cristina, is joining delegates from the 187 @ilo member states at the 114th session of the @ilo International Labour Conference in Geneva, in her capacity as Executive Board Member of the International Alliance of App-based Transport Workers @IAATW_Org. The issue of #decentwork in the platform economy is just one of the issues on the agenda. Cristina says: "I'm looking forward to sharing experiences and perspectives with delegates from across the globe on the challenges gig workers face in the platform economy, and learning more about the campaigns and collective action in the different member states that have delivered real gains for workers."

Many of our members have raised concerns about the dreadful conditions at the @manairport private hire vehicle designated waiting area at JetParks 1. Our General Secretary, Cristina-Georgiana Ioanitescu visited the site recently and here are some of the pictures she took. Our members deserve better than a flooded plot, full of potholes, with no facilities. We're pleased to report that the airport executive has agreed to meet with us. We are looking forward to a constructive and productive meeting, and will be pushing for rapid, meaningful improvements for our members Manchester, a clear timeline for a new holding area, and interim welfare arrangements while a permanent solution is being worked out.
