As my team and I prepare for the Keeneland September Sale, I have two major concerns. First, after studying these books for more than 15 years, I hope the physicals look better than the pedigrees. Outside of a few elite proven stallions and first-year and second-year sires, Books 1 and 2 are extremely top-heavy. For two decades, America has sold many of its greatest Grade 1 and Breeders’ Cup mares to Japan. Their daughters now have daughters, and Japan’s pedigrees keep getting stronger. Meanwhile, we have weakened our foundation. We have weakened our female families. We have weakened the American broodmare band, and we have hurt the breed. Big numbers at the top don’t mean the overall breed is healthy. I am not impressed with the quality or diversity of this catalog. My second concern is transparency. Last year, Hip 5, an Uncle Mo filly and full sister to Seismic Beauty, was reported sold for $900,000 after I stopped bidding around $800,000. The ticket was signed by an agent. Thirty minutes later, the consignor offered me the horse for $800,000. I offered $500,000. They declined, then called back and accepted. I own the horse. I paid $500,000. Yet one year later, Keeneland still publicly reports a $900,000 sale, even though Keeneland invoiced me for $500,000. Who was the original buyer??? Who authorized that bid??? Why did the transaction collapse immediately??? Was someone trying to push me to $950,000??? How many other reported prices differ from what was actually paid??? The agent who signed the ticket must be held accountable and explain exactly what happened. But the ultimate responsibility sits with Keeneland’s president, senior management and trustees. They knew about this. I was crystal clear that I wanted this changed ASAP. They refused to correct the public record. And let’s be honest: Keeneland is the @jockeyclub. Same leaders. Same bullshit. Three leading Jockey Club stewards, Everett Dobson, Bill Lear and Bill Farish, are also Keeneland trustees. They constantly preach transparency. It’s time to practice it. I have spent between $10 million and $20 million at this sale annually for each of the past 10 years. Buyers are investing serious money and putting their trust in Keeneland. I am demanding a full investigation, a public explanation and a corrected record. We deserve answers. Every buyer deserves transparency. What happened @keenelandsales??? Does anyone know what happened???
