Nobel prize winning economists have no authority relative to anyone else on what the distribution of income or wealth should be.
A bunch of Nobel Prize-winning economists have endorsed California's proposed billionaire wealth tax. I can't oppose them on authority. But I know some academics who can.

This is how the CUNY system - which had once been a crown jewel of public higher education in its heyday - was eventually destroyed for a generation.

The UC system is being flooded with students with 4.0 GPAs. It is now over 100,000 a year (left). Yet California 11th graders proficiency levels haven't budged (right).

Late-September 2001, someone mailed Anthrax to the networks from the mailbox across the street from my office in the Princeton IR Section. For the next year my mail arrived irradiated in plastic baggies. These were the conditions under which I wrote my job market paper.

I sat on those steps with a friend who worked at the Deutsche Bank building. The plaza was full of WTC workers on lunch breaks. Four days later I saw the plane hit on live TV. There's a trauma that I never really processed. Princeton classes weren't cancelled and I was TAing an econometrics section two days later. The world changed but we kept working. On days like this I feel the grief that I largely suppressed.
Sharing my favorite images of the WTC today

I’ll bet $5 million at 1-to-100 odds that humanity survives the next ten years.
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

In the Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes, 24% of active unemployed searchers say they are considering only WFH jobs. Could preferences for WFH + fewer opportunities be the reason that unemployment duration has been rising since 2023?

Two perspectives on manufacturing in the US that show a different trend post-2022: payroll employment (left) and real value added (right). With productivity growth, we should not expect manufacturing employment to track overall productive activity.

New use case for AI. Calculate precisely how many gallons of gas I need to hit to required level on a rental return. Requires a photo of fuel gauge + make and model of vehicle.
