Nobel prize winning economists have no authority relative to anyone else on what the distribution of income or wealth should be.
A bunch of Nobel Prize-winning economists have endorsed California's proposed billionaire wealth tax. I can't oppose them on authority. But I know some academics who can.

You looking for a roadmap to how to become a millionaire, or perhaps you are concerned that inequality is outrageously high? Either way, this book is a must read.
Today is launch day for The Everywhere Millionaire! I talked with @PrincetonEcon to answer a few questions about the book. 1. You can order your copy today us.macmillan.com/books/97812… 2. Please share this with friends who might be interested in the American Dream and/or American inequality 3. Amazon reviews are open now too, and a short one helps more than you'd think.

Late-September 2001, someone mailed Anthrax to the networks from the mailbox across the street from my office in the Princeton IR Section. For the next year my mail arrived irradiated in plastic baggies. These were the conditions under which I wrote my job market paper.

I sat on those steps with a friend who worked at the Deutsche Bank building. The plaza was full of WTC workers on lunch breaks. Four days later I saw the plane hit on live TV. There's a trauma that I never really processed. Princeton classes weren't cancelled and I was TAing an econometrics section two days later. The world changed but we kept working. On days like this I feel the grief that I largely suppressed.

I’ll bet $5 million at 1-to-100 odds that humanity survives the next ten years.
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

In the Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes, 24% of active unemployed searchers say they are considering only WFH jobs. Could preferences for WFH + fewer opportunities be the reason that unemployment duration has been rising since 2023?

Add a third axis and we have the Roback model. Even then, you can see what cities are productivity powerhouses, especially in that fourth quadrant.
The cities with the nicest weather in the United States are almost always the most expensive.

I'm coming to think that data center hysteria has been manufactured as the opening bid to overcome community resistance to nuclear.
Nearly 3 times as many people (44% vs 15%) say they'd support a nuclear power plant being built near where they live than a data center. That is insane.

Manufacturing share of employment is a productivity story. It plateaued in 2009 when productivity stalled out.
This is a graph of manufacturing employment. Its downward trend began decades before the "China shock," and the "China shock" did not change the trend.

Same thought but for bookstores. Bookstores are generally unprofitable, but nice to have in the neighborhood.
extraordinarily rich people living in sf, a request: can you please use a few of these billboards for very beautiful art? would be cool if the city was just like, we’re not actually selling anything up here today we just thought this looked nice

I don't think there can be much debate at this point about whether federal borrowing is crowding out private investment, the question is how much.
From the @FT: "A $25bn Treasury auction of 30-year bonds on Thursday drew yields as high as 5.22 per cent, according to the US Treasury department. It marked the highest yield since the 5.52 per cent paid in August 2001, after which 30-year auctions were suspended for almost five years" #economy #markets #bonds #debt

West Oakland is the new industrial heartland.
Elon Musk is following Jeff Bezos into Oakland. Just like that. Back to back leases signed by Bezos then Elon. 100,000 sq ft for Bezos, and 40,000 sq ft for Elon.

In 2021 there was a lot of discussion on labor market distortions from expanded UI. In retrospect, the first-order problem was fraud and poor screening.
