.@HHS_ASPR John Knox and ASPR senior leaders visited the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico to hear from tribal leaders and emergency management about natural hazards affecting their community, local response capabilities, and opportunities to strengthen preparedness and coordination with tribal partners. Engaging before a disaster gives partners time to understand local needs, identify challenges, and establish lines of communication. This lays the foundation for a faster, informed, and coordinated response when a disaster strikes.

Puerto Rico is strengthening its ability to care for patients with high-consequence infectious diseases, and ASPR is proud to support that work. On September 1, ASPR announced that the Administración de Servicios Médicos de Puerto Rico and Hospital Universitario Dr. Ramón Ruiz Arnau in Bayamón were selected to receive Level 2 Special Pathogen Treatment and Network Development (STAND) Awards. Each facility will receive up to $500,000 to expand specialized care through workforce training, specialized equipment, and infrastructure improvements. The awards build on ASPR’s ongoing partnership with the Government of Puerto Rico to strengthen preparedness across the healthcare, emergency management, and emergency medical services. Sandra Carpio, Director of ASPR’s Caribbean Area Office, joined our partners to discuss this work, including hands-on PPE training, hospital assessments, and efforts to identify and address healthcare and public health preparedness gaps. Together, we are building stronger, more resilient systems and greater readiness for emerging infectious disease threats.
