We're used to thinking of open-source models as an unadulterated good. But in the case of AI, they can actually pose additional dangers, as @ReidHoffman and I got into at #CGI2026. I appreciated this nuanced discussion.

Bitget was hit today.
We traced one of the main onchain clusters, and after moving through multiple wallets, 40,000 ETH was split evenly across four addresses.
All four are still holding. A thread 🧵
Here is what we can confirm at this stage:
On the attack:
Our security team has made initial progress in tracing the source. The attacker compromised a critical backend system within our wallet infrastructure, used it to spoof transaction data, and triggered our authorization process to move funds out. Private key compromise has been ruled out — this excludes the more severe risk scenarios. Loss containment is confirmed. No further unauthorized transfers are possible. The specific method of system intrusion remains under active investigation. A full technical report will follow once confirmed.
On withdrawal restoration:
Multiple technical teams are working in parallel on system remediation and security hardening. Withdrawal restoration is being prepared in parallel. We will announce a timeline as soon as one is confirmed — we will not commit to a window we cannot guarantee.

At 18:31 UTC on September 24, 2026, Bitget's security systems detected unauthorized transfers from some of our hot wallets. Our security team activated emergency response protocols immediately.
What we have confirmed:
-Estimated funds affected: approximately $351.6 million
-Cold wallets remain fully secure. Bitget operates a three-tier wallet architecture — the breach contained only a portion of the hot wallet and warm wallet layers.
-User funds are safe. The full amount of this loss falls within the coverage of Bitget's User Protection Fund, which currently holds over $464 million
Actions we have taken:
-Emergency response team activated within minutes of detection
-Abnormal transfer addresses identified, flagged, and reported
-Withdrawals temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure, pending security review
-Law enforcement and on-chain security firms have been formally notified and are engaged
What this means for you:
-Your account balances are accurate and your assets are protected
-Deposits and trading remain fully operational
Withdrawals are temporarily paused and will be restored as soon as the security review is complete
-What comes next: We will provide updates on an hourly basis across this channel and all official platforms. A full incident report — including root cause analysis and corrective actions — will be published within 24 hours. We will not speculate on the attack vector until the investigation is complete.
Bitget has navigated multiple market cycles. We will not run from this. Every dollar and every decision will be accounted for, transparently and in full.

my simple counter example:
coding.
coding with agents is MORE entertaining than manually doing it. (for most people)

most of us are limited by what we THINK we can do.
this actually gets worse the more experienced you are! some people refer to this as "the experience tax".
"I've done this thing before. it takes 3-6 months"
... well now you can do it in 1 afternoon! and the quality will actually be HIGHER!!

I've found two things useful in this regard:
1/ hire hungry juniors without the experience tax.
the obvious move. no, entry-level jobs aren't going away.
young people are so "inexperienced and naive" that they don't know they "weren't supposed to" solve that problem in 2 hours with AI!!
feature, not a bug.
2/ challenge myself to do superhuman things.
doing user analytics? yeah i'll go down to the individual events of an individual user, reconstructing their entire user journey. connecting every single data point available across all instrumention. and I'll do this for all the users. and i'll write individual documents for each user. work that would have taken a team of 10+ data analysts months just 5 years ago.
exploring an idea? yeah i'll create a full github repo with deep research on every single aspect of the project. i'll go unreasonably deep on every topic. would have required a phd in every vertical. but now it doesn't.
prototyping an app? yeah i'll actually just build the real app end-to-end with separate agents reviewing it and critiquing it until it's great. and likely throw the whole thing away afterwards. then do it again.

going after problems you can't solve without AI forces you to develop superhuman capabilities.
Ben Horowitz says instead of banning AI, educators should set problems students can't solve without it:
"I was talking to Dan Boneh, who is a great professor of computer science and cryptography at Stanford. His take on AI was: You have two choices. You can ban it, and by the way, that won't work. Or you can make the problems so hard that you can't solve them without AI."
"What he's seeing is, 'I've got students solving things that no student in history could have ever solved.' That's what's possible. You want to have that orientation: What can you solve with the tools? What can you do that's a breakthrough? Now everybody has an opportunity to create a breakthrough."
"Then you're a main character, not an NPC. That's what the academy is about. Do you want to be a main character? If you want to be a main character, we help you do that. If you want to be a cog in a machine, this is not going to be the best place for you."
