Since August 2025, ATF and our 28 federal and local partners have continued working to make D.C. safer for residents and visitors by sharing intelligence and resources across the city. With 17,744 arrests and 2,073 crime guns seized from criminals, we are driving violent crime down throughout the D.C. region.
The Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force represents the largest collaboration of law enforcement agencies and the National Guard in modern history, united by a clear mission: to proactively end crime in a major American city.

▶️NIBIN Win: In June 2024, a Florida drive by killed a mother and her 4 year old. A tip identified the shooter. One month later in Georgia, that same suspect crashed during a chase and ran into the woods, dropping a bookbag. Atlanta ATF K-9s found the bag, with his ID and two guns inside, one with a machinegun conversion device. His DNA was on both guns. NIBIN showed that one of those guns was used in an Atlanta shooting two weeks earlier. He was arrested, pled guilty, and was sentenced in August to 25 months. The Florida murder case is still pending trial.

ATF has upgraded its alert system for federal firearms and explosives licensees to the BEACON/Everbridge platform to strengthen and streamline emergency and other critical communications with licensees. During hurricane season, having a disaster preparedness plan is the best way to anticipate, prepare for, mitigate the effect of, and recover from a business disruption.
Federal Explosives Licensees/Permittees and Federal Firearms Licensees have a two-fold interest in having a plan in place: the need to safeguard their business to facilitate a quick recovery and the need to protect the public from the risk of theft or loss of explosive materials or firearms and ammunition during or after a storm.

ATF's forensic science capabilities recently got a boost with the addition of the ATF Forensic Crime Gun Intelligence Laboratory on the Wichita State University’s Innovation Campus.
This is the first forensic lab dedicated to DNA recovery from fired cartridge cases. It pairs advanced DNA collection and analysis with high-throughput workflows to quickly generate investigative leads from crime scenes and felon-in-possession cases, linking suspects through national DNA database hits and connecting crimes even when different firearms are used.

The D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force has seized more than 2,000 firearms from criminals since the operation began in August 2025. The task force has made a total of 17,056 arrests, including 35 for homicide, 3,433 for controlled substances, 1,702 for firearms violations, and 52 for sex offenses.
“Removing 2,000 crime guns from the hands of violent offenders is not just a statistic; it’s a clear demonstration of ATF’s focus on violent criminals, not law-abiding gun owners,” said ATF Director Rob Cekada. “We will continue to drive investigations forward, shut down illegal trafficking, and protect American communities.”
