8/ What the job looks like when you get more senior
When people are trying to get into Corp Dev, I think they tend to imagine the job as a lot of financial modelling and diligence.
There is certainly some of that. Depending on the company it might be 5% of the job or 25% of the job. But the more senior you get, the less time you spend personally moving numbers around in Excel and the more time you spend figuring out what you should actually be doing.
I talk to something like 500 companies a year. I am obviously not trying to buy 500 companies. I’m trying to understand markets, meet interesting people, collect information, figure out what technologies matter, understand where industries are moving, and build relationships with companies that we might want to do something with eventually.
Then occasionally one of those conversations turns into something real, and my team has to actually get the deal done. This is the part of the job I really like. It is part strategy, part finance, part negotiation, part psychology, and a surprising amount of just talking to people.
