NASA has awarded Advanced Space a follow-on Phase II SBIR contract to mature Lunar Sentinel for close-approach risk assessment of objects at the Moon. 🏆🌕 The project, managed by the Small Spacecraft and Distributed Systems team, part of the NASA RTMD, at @NASAAmes, focuses on developing algorithms to detect, track, and catalog non-transmitting objects in Low Lunar Orbit (LLO) using a hybrid network of lunar-surface and in-space optical sensors. Advanced Space will mature an end-to-end autonomous cataloging and risk-assessment capability, including detection network design, track association, orbit determination, conjunction assessment, and long-term catalog maintenance. The work is intended to provide a framework for a future distributed lunar-orbit cataloging and space-traffic-management constellation with minimal reliance on Earth. Advanced imaging capabilities are coming to CAPSTONE 02. We’re excited to partner with @Livermore_Lab (LLNL), whose tri-optic imaging payload will bring advanced optical capabilities to the mission. The payload will image CAPSTONE 02’s companion spacecraft at ranges relevant to rendezvous and proximity operations, providing data supporting relative navigation. It will also observe the Moon, Earth, star fields, and distant solar-system objects to support mission imaging and navigation. At SmallSat 2026, Dr. Jeffrey Parker, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, gave a flash talk on how we navigate ESCAPADE's loiter phase. The twin spacecraft launched on Blue Origin's New Glenn, but they did not head straight for the Red Planet. Instead, they settled into a loiter phase, holding in an orbit near Earth for about a year until the planets line up this November. Then they swing past Earth, fire their engines, and set course for Mars. Thank you, Jeff, for your work leading the trajectory design behind this mission. Today, we are elated in celebration of the successful launch of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which will offer a new window on the universe and a major step forward for astrophysics. Congratulations to the entire Roman team, and Advanced Space’s Cassie Webster (carried in the image), Co-Flight Dynamics Lead, and Adam Michaels, Navigation Lead and Principal Mission Design Engineer. CAPSTONE 02 is built to advance all three, and we are excited to have Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) on the mission. Recently we announced our first NASA Announcement of Collaboration Opportunity (ACO) award, "Integration of Onboard Autonomy for Flight Demonstrations." For our second award, Advanced Space will develop Distributed Spacecraft Autonomy (DSA) for future missions at the Moon. Building on DSA algorithms and software already demonstrated on the Starling mission, this collaboration with @NASAAmes will transition, customize, and mature autonomous capabilities for future cislunar flight demonstrations. The goal is autonomous multi-spacecraft communications and coordination in cislunar space, reducing risk for future lunar swarm missions and accelerating the commercialization of capabilities that support Artemis and Moon-to-Mars.
