Around 1000 undocumented migrant men came into Dover today which doesn’t include the other 1300 over the past five days. This is all planned.

This is my Dad. He's 100 next Saturday. As a present the government are sending a lady next week to arrange the sale of his bungalow to fund his care. He farmed for 60 years to feed us If @andyburnham wants to fund something closer to home perhaps properly fund elderly care?

7.30pm. North East Fife. Most people have finished work for the day. But not for many farmers. The work is never finished. The hours are long. They work every day to provide our food. It’s time for the government to give a fair deal for farmers instead of punishing them.

An Afghan soldier is given refuge in Britain. He brings his mother, two brothers and two sisters with him, so we give them all a home. The soldier has just been jailed for 14 years for raping 2 14 year old schoolgirls. Can we deport the entire family now? gbnews.com/news/migrant-cris…

Jim Ratcliffe said: “I’m sure people will find it hard to believe that we are being forced to mothball some of the most efficient plants in Europe but with gas prices now 12 times the level in the US and eight times that of China, we just cannot compete." “Not only is the ridiculously high gas price in the UK destroying our manufacturing base and the jobs of hard-working people on Humberside, it is also massively increasing the environmental burden with replacement products supplied from the USA at double the carbon emissions and from China at eight times the emission level. “The UK government’s energy policy is leading to economic vandalism on an industrial scale, exporting jobs to China and the United States and driving up global CO2 emissions at a stroke.” Labour's deindustrialisation drive is proceeding apace.

This is not a photograph. Every leaf and every reflection was put there by hand, in oil, by the Danish painter Peder Mørk Mønsted in 1894. It is called Wooded path by a river, and it captures the hardest thing there is to paint: a forest in full sunlight. Light through trees never falls evenly. It scatters into countless flecks of brightness and shadow, a glow on one leaf, darkness on the next, a glint on the water that would vanish the moment a cloud passed. Get those even slightly wrong, and the whole thing collapses into a green blur. Mønsted got every one of them right, and in doing so he captured something anyone who has stood alone in a wood will recognize immediately: that hush that falls over you, the sense of being completely at peace, and the feeling that the whole world has paused to breathe…

Jeremy has weighed in on the recent attempt to cancel Ed Sheeran after the Macklemore controversy. In this week’s column in The Sun, he wrote the following: "He literally said nothing at all and, for that, his fans are trying to offload tickets for his forthcoming tour, his support acts have all walked and, from what I hear, even his band is refusing to play with him. ‘They want him to sound off on Palestine, and because he’s not really that sort of person, the keyboard warriors have sent him to Coventry." "How can you protest about Ed when you don’t know what he thinks? Because he hasn’t told us." What are your thoughts on the matter?

Almost all the reinforced concrete foundations of wind turbines ever built — weighing up to a thousand tonnes each — could be left in the ground. The concrete may be mostly inert, but over the decades, these blocks can disrupt deep-soil hydrology and remain as permanent industrial junk below the surface of rural landscapes. The concrete base of a typical early 2-3 MW wind turbine weighs 400 to 800 tonnes. But the foundations of the even bigger, more recent turbines (5 MW+) can exceed 1,000 tonnes. The number reaching the end of their working lives could soon surpass the tens of thousands. As they degrade, they also risk leaking gearbox fluids, hydraulic liquids, and synthetic lubricants into the soil. In many jurisdictions, decommissioning regulations only require the operator to clear the foundation to a depth of 1 meter below the surface. While contracts state operators are responsible, the financial reality is complex. Bank guarantees or bonds set aside for removal (around $100,000 per turbine) are woefully inadequate. Real-world estimates for total removal and site restoration can exceed $200,000 to $400,000 per unit. If the cost of total removal vastly exceeds the bond, there is a strong incentive for shell companies to declare bankruptcy — leaving landowners to foot the bill. We are already seeing this play out at Victoria's Codrington wind farm. Operators announced plans to remove only the top 1.5-meter pedestal, leaving the bulk of the project's 20,000 tonnes of subterranean foundations permanently buried. This triggered an intense backlash from local communities and MPs who argue it violates the original promise to restore the land. No one wants to deal with these massive concrete and steel monoliths once the turbines are decommissioned.

WTF!!! Lenny Henry has BLASTED the word picnic calling it RACIST calling for it to be banned because it originated in the 1700s and evolved from the phrase ‘pick an N word’. Lenny said: ‘We need to decolonise our language. Instead of picnic why not use outdoor gathering or meet & eat. That way you are not perpetuating the history of linching’ he lamented ❤️ Why does he always play the race card?
Community note
Lenny Henry has not made the quoted statements about the word "picnic." The claim matches a post from the Facebook page "The Lamented," and the etymology is a debunked myth; the word comes from 17th-century French "pique-nique." facebook.com/thelamentedoff… politifact.com/factchecks/201… reuters.com/article/uk-fac… snopes.com/fact-check/pic… etymonline.com/word/picni

Dear councils, 97% of UK meadows are gone. So if you have wildflowers like ox-eye daisies on roadverges and in public spaces, don't spray them with weedkiller or over-mow them. Let's give pollinating insects like bees and butterflies a chance 🐝

Would you leave the banks of one of the ancient rivers of London looking like a rubbish dump? @EnvAgency would. When they sent investigation teams down to the Aldersbrook earlier this year to threaten local volunteers with two years in jail for restoring the river without permission, they didn’t even bother to look at the the piles of junk and hazardous materials (including oil and fuel) on the abandoned allotment plots next to the river. Even worse, when I asked them to remove the rubbish and restore the brook themselves (given local volunteers aren’t allowed to do it) they refused. So their plan is, apparently, to leave the river to die and to prosecute anyone who dares to try & restore the river. However, local river guardians are not waiting for permission to do what the authorities have failed to do. In the absence of the EA, the local authority or the landowner doing anything about the waste on the banks of the Aldersbrook, we’re going to start cleaning it, ready for the full restoration of this section of the brook later in the winter.
