Toms wrote an article about this data and they seem pretty confused. To clear things up 1) 18A is squarely in the N3 camp. It's not a N2 competitor like they claim in the article. 2) 18AP is a N3X competitor (JP Morgan Asia claim). Maybe a N2 competitor, not N2P. As Naga said it falls between N3 and N2P. 3) 18AP is probably 2Q's behind N2P in yield. So for 14A to have a 5% PPA deficit vs TSMC A14 (Naga's claim). Means Intel shrunk the PPA gap from 10%ish to 5% range. A Q1 28 14A HVM date means Intel shrunk the yield gap to match TSMC. This is great news for Intel Foundry and why external customers are excited. Given supply shortages fabless companies want 2nd sourcing going forward. Intel can build a business off that while looking for future nodes to rebuild its technology lead. $INTC
Naga Chandrasekaran who is the EVP, CTO, and GM, Intel Foundry. In a meeting with Keybanc told them: Intel, "Expects 14A performance to be within 5% of TSM's A14". Intel is not afraid of CoPoS. "Sees sustained leadership in advanced packaging with EMIB-T even with TSM introducing CoPoS". I must say that the news around 14A PPA is truly extraordinary given 14A yields and ramp are extremely aggressive. Intel is finally sticking its neck out to say how their nodes compare with a % range to TSMC. Note goes on to say that Intel has a server part on 14A in 2028. Coral Rapids might not be on 18A-U if that's the case. Coral could be 14A, but I have capacity concerns (2029 is the big ramp, pointings towards 2029 Ohio volume) $INTC

Really enjoyed this conversation with Jodi Shelton and @LipBuTan1. He opens up about growing up in Malaysia, finding his own path, taking risks, and the experiences that shaped how he leads today. There’s a lot to take away... listen to the season two premiere of @ABitPersonalPod. piped.video/watch?v=Nz2e-RJd…

@SquashBionic any idea what this 14A server part in 2028 is?

I have made the point before that it is not a node war between Intel and TSM but sheesh... within 5%. Not saying all of a sudden it is a node war but think of this as the cherry on top. 🍒 And yes, Intel absolutely does not have to worry about CoPoS at all.

Keybanc identifies Apple, Nvidia, Marvell, Microsoft, Micron and OpenAI as Intel Foundry customers. "Customer engagements on 18A-P and 14A now span engineering data, design work, and capacity planning, including discussions around locking-in future capacity. Importantly, 14A is substantially better positioned for external customers vs. 18A, with mgmt estimating 85-90% of required IP blocks are available today, vs. only 15% when INTC initially engaged externally on 18A. Mgmt would not confirm specific commitments, although did point to INTC's recent ~$23B equity raise and its stated need to fund growth when asked whether capacity planning implied committed customers, which we view as supportive of engagements becoming increasingly commercial. Mgmt characterized the initial phase of external Foundry success as onboarding a couple of relatively high-vol customers, with subsequent phases capable of scaling significantly faster if those initial ramps are successful. In our view, this aligns with the Foundry momentum we previously identified across AAPL, AMD, NVDA, MRVL, MSFT, MU, and OpenAI." "mgmt highlighted 18A is expected to reach industry-standard yields exiting '26, which was characterized as broadly comparable to TSM" Intel believes Arizona can support 80-100K WSPM near end of decade. With WSPM more than doubling from 30K WSPM this year. Ireland footprint is still 50% utilization. $INTC

TSMC REPORTEDLY PLANS 3%-6% WAFER PRICE HIKES STARTING JANUARY 2027 DigiTimes says increases could be larger for 2nm and 3nm, where demand is running ahead of supply. Supply-chain sources say: • 8-inch utilization is above 100% • Sub-45nm capacity is fully loaded • Orders are visible through 2030 • Arizona pricing remains elevated due to higher manufacturing costs The demand is being driven by AI-related GPUs, ASICs, HBM, power chips, controllers, analog, sensors, optics and advanced packaging. TSMC declined to comment.

I had Muse use the search API for Bechtels site to find weekly job postings for Intel's New Albany Fab. As you can see the hiring ramp started in July and has continued. Farthest it would go back is April. Anecdotally I can tell you last year checking the site there was very few postings. Intel's Fab is #3 for the most job openings of Bechtels Engineering. Yet Intel has not officially announced an acceleration 😉 $INTC

Another reason to believe that the Intel Hynix JV situation should be resolved by the midterms or end of the year is that the 35% tax credit ends December 31st 2026. If you take steps before the end of the year to start your semiconductor manufacturing project then you get the credit going forward. Tax credit is 35% off everything, equipment, buildings etc. Hynix would be stupid to miss the deadline to announce it's investment. $INTC
Replying to @stevehou
Let's see if Intel announces Hynix deal before the election. Trump admin probably wants that. That announcement could also include Intels accelerated plan for Ohio fabs. Could push Intel over 1T

"We want to reunify the island, and that aspiration has grown stronger. You feel the pressure in Chinese society and on the leadership’s agenda. I believe the leadership wants to achieve more progress toward reunification, and society is eager to see it rather than watch Taiwan drift away. The two sides reinforce each other: Because the DPP is in power, with what we see as a de facto independence policy, urgency rises on Beijing’s side—and when Beijing acts on that urgency, Taipei feels threatened and moves further toward independence," said @mawangcun1. wsj.com/world/china/before-t…
