I’m incredibly excited to return to my hometown and speak at the 2025 NRWC — right here in one of my two favorite cities, Pittsburgh! 🖤💛 Pittsburgh and Phoenix the two cities who absolutely made me who I am today and surrounded me with me with some of the finest best people I have ever known. and of course, bring on the Steeler game. Sunday night cannot come soon enough.

It was a day of connection, innovation, and commitment. We honored Fair Chance Champions like Sen. Shawnna Bolick, Rep. Sarah Liguori, and Mercy Cares AZ for creating opportunities for justice-impacted individuals. Keynote speaker Jeffrey Korzenik, author of Untapped Talent, shared why second-chance hiring is smart business. Our panel on fair chance programs sparked lasting action.
Fair chance hiring tackles a crisis: one in three U.S. adults has a criminal record, facing barriers that fuel poverty and recidivism. It empowers women and families through Arouet’s education, mentorship, and reentry programs, while addressing workforce shortages. I once asked an elderly woman what it felt like to grow old — to know that most of her years were now behind her.
She smiled and said something I’ve never forgotten:
“I’ve always been the same age. The voice in my head never changed. I’m still the same girl I was at sixteen, still my mother’s daughter. I kept waiting to feel old one day, but it never really happened.”
She said she’s watched her body weaken, her energy fade, and her memory slip at times — but deep inside, nothing ever changed. The person she’s always been never grew old.
That moment stayed with me. Our bodies age, but our spirits remain young. The soul doesn’t wrinkle or fade. So when you speak with someone older, remember — inside, they’re still that same child, full of dreams and laughter.
No matter how many years pass, we all need the same things: love, understanding, and a reason to keep going.

You wouldn't know it because it doesn't fit the conventional narrative, but last week, the Senate passed the bipartisan Second Chance Reauthorization Act, which would continue recidivism-reduction and reentry services nationwide. It was sponsored by Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV).
Over 95% of the prison population will eventually be released, with more than 400,000 individuals released each year. This Act provides resources to ensure that the millions of people returning from prison each year continue to receive evidence-based reentry services.

As a Pittsburgher, I💛🖤 this! Growing up in Pittsburgh —absolutely taught me about what justice means, being raised there inspired me to a life of service, and I will forever be grateful. But this particular post means the world to me as I am so invested in an organization that works to support women and families exiting our justice system @Arouetforgood and even more exciting is I am going to be in Pittsburgh in two weeks for the national workforce and reentry conference. And just as importantly, I will be attending the. @steelers/Green Bay game! I could not be more excited. A week focused on justice, reentry, amazing Pittsburgh people, and of course, Steelers football.🏈
Jonnu Smith, tight end for the @steelers, visited SCI Fayette with five of his teammates on Tuesday to discuss reentry with the population—including Smith’s brother, who is incarcerated at the facility.
The Steelers—including Pat Freiermuth, Matt Sokol, Connor Heyward, Corliss Waitman, and Calvin Anderson—met with a small group to discuss their reentry plans before meeting with a larger group in the gym. The large event began with a presentation by Bruce Harris and David Conway of Community Kitchen, an organization supported by the Steelers that hires reentrants for culinary careers.
