After years of struggling to pay rent, skipping holidays, and working extra shifts, Melissa finally bought her first house in Atlanta.
She was 32, and it had taken almost everything she had to save enough for the down payment.
The first person she called was her best friend, Andrea. They had been dreaming about owning homes since their twenties.
“Girl, I finally got the keys!” Melissa shouted over the phone.
Andrea congratulated her, but something about her response felt different.
A week later, Melissa invited her over for dinner. She expected laughter, pictures, and the usual excitement.
Instead, Andrea walked around the house and said, “You must have had someone helping you financially. There's no way you saved all that money yourself.”
Melissa explained how she had worked two jobs and saved for years.
Andrea simply replied, “Well, congratulations. Some people are just lucky.”
Melissa ignored the comment, believing her friend was having a difficult time.
But that was only the beginning.
Sometimes, getting what you prayed for comes with losing people you thought would celebrate you.
