Just added the 1816–21 Turpin Monocotyledones atlas, 82 hand-coloured plates in extraordinary condition. One was drawn by Turpin’s son who died 6 days after turning 18. The caption reads: “Turpin fils pinxt. Mort le 21 Août 1821, âgé de 18 ans et 6 jours.” Fewer than 200 survive

1/3 21 vols of the 1836–49 “Disciples” edition of Cuvier’s Le Règne Animal — the most beautiful zoological book ever made — live on my shelves. Uniform 1840s crimson French morocco, still perfect after 180 years. Every text volume present. Almost 950 hand-coloured plates.
