Hermione is the rule follower.
Twenty goats on this farm, and she is the obedient one. Last Friday night she was one of two who ran.
The alert came around 11. In two summers they had never left the boundary after dark.
That's her being carried by
@Grantwills in the photo. They're both rule followers, so to keep it straight: Grant is the human. 😉
The goats wear Nofence collars. GPS and solar. I draw their pasture on my phone and move it around the property. They spend their summers eating
#buckthorn, an invasive brush that is miserable to get rid of. The areas they cleaned still look pristine.
Grant and three of his friends were over. Tammy had gone to bed. We handed out rubber boots and coats and headed out on the Ranger. Not much moon.
The other runner was Panic, one of our two smallest goats, Pain and Panic. That's her in the photo under the trailer, wearing the collar that told on her. Running off is just Panic being Panic.
Hermione leaving was different.
We found the two and turned the fence off. The whole herd was acting strange. Usually they are playful and curious. Instead they huddled in close to us and stood together, looking out into the dark, watching.
Hermione had a patch of fur torn off her back. It had been there earlier that day. No blood. She was clearly upset.
I had never moved them at night. We went back for grain and flashlights. Usually the grain starts a fight. They ignored it and followed us anyway. Half a mile back to the pen, running ahead, staying bunched.
They stayed in the pen a few days. Coyotes, foxes, bears, the occasional wolf and mountain lion live out here. Could have been a tree she scraped getting away. We don't know.
She is doing fantastic. Maybe a little more scared. This morning they all went back out, a little closer to the house.
Turns out even the rule follower breaks a rule when she's scared enough. I don't blame her.
