The National Science Foundation will issue roughly 30% fewer new research grants in fiscal 2026 than in fiscal 2025. This is the lowest number in over 4 decades. Meanwhile, China is rapidly scaling up their public R&D spending and their STEM PhD output. International talent and high-quality research is shifting away from the USA and toward China. Chinese institutions now account for a leading share of highly cited academic papers. Defunding science grants will put a bottleneck on the USA innovation pipeline and we will fall behind. All Americans should be very alarmed, especially MAGA, because it contradicts all of the Trump admin's professed goals of keeping USA competitive with other countries.
