The Double Standard in Criticizing the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) Marriage to Lady Aisha
English convert to Islam explains why those who accuse the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) of being immoral for marrying Aisha (peace be upon her) in the 6th century are historically and morally inconsistent and ignorant.
• The question about the Prophet Muhammad’s PBUH marriage to Lady Aisha is often asked in bad faith, with no intention of accepting any answer.
• Historical events should not be judged by modern moral standards (presentism), as if modern standards are objective truth.
• Social norms, laws, and expectations were different in the past, including marriage ages.
• Critics of the Prophet PBUH are inconsistent for condemning historical practices while similar standards existed in their own societies’ past.
• Modern age of consent laws, that allow people to fornicate, still vary between countries today.
• Meaning there is no single universal standard. What is classified as illegal in one modern state is classified as legal in another modern state.
• So a person can be accused of being a sexual offender/pedophile in one modern nation state but not in another modern nation state.
• If modern standards are applied to the past, they must be applied consistently across all historical figures and cultures.
• Similar practices existed across many societies historically, not just in Islamic societies.
• People in earlier times matured physically and mentally faster due to harsher living conditions and different life expectations.
• Pre-modernity, there was no extended adolescence phase. There was only childhood and adulthood, and the transition was marked by physical puberty.
• The concept of adolescence only clearly emerged in the 1800s / 19th century.
• Industrialization and schooling began to delay entry into full adult roles.
• Today in the 21st century, even many 25-year-olds are mentally immature due to the softness of modern lifestyles.
• By today’s 21st century standards, marrying a young person would be unacceptable to most because even though they may be physically mature/already have reached puberty, they are likely not to be mentally mature.
• There was no widespread criticism of early marriages in pre-modern times.
• The marriage of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH to Lady Aisha has only become widely criticized in recent times.
• For 1300 years prior, it was not criticised, even by ardent opponents of Islam, because they saw nothing morally wrong with it.
• Critics unfairly single out Islam while ignoring similar issues in Christianity and Judaism.
