Maresca's treatment of Cherki - A timeline of mismanagement.
The backdrop - Maresca joined a City team that had two stars, Haaland and Cherki. Cherki in his first Prem season had 12 league assists even though he played only HALF the available minutes. Yet it became no secret that Maresca wanted to sign Enzo even though City had signed Anderson and were close to completing the Bouaddi deal.
GAME 1, Arsenal, Community Shield - Meanwhile he immediately benched Cherki for the first game of the season as preparation for Enzo's arrival and got destroyed 3-0 by Arsenal in the Community shield.
GAME 2, Bournemouth, PL -
He then benched Cherki again in the first league game and his side was losing so brought him on in the 60th min, he gave two assists and saved Maresca.
GAME 3, Crystal Palace, PL - Couldn't bench Cherki again in the next game or fans would have revolted so he started Cherki who scored 2 goals. Cherki in the postgame interview as much as confessed that Maresca had implied he was going to be subbed off at half time, and Cherki had to almost beg for 5 minutes. The goals came after that. Still subbed him off later.
D-Day, GAME 4, Coventry, PL -
And finally the day arrived. Enzo Fernandez was signed and ready to start for City. What does Maresca do? Start Enzo in a namesake double pivot but it's actually two 10s (Enzo and Cherki). Enzo takes up half the space Cherki was occupying, while also forcing Cherki to run back to defend more or get the ball since Enzo wasn't progressing it enough. The result? City score only one goal against a newly promoted Coventry, their lowest goals of the Prem season coinciding with Enzo's arrival. And of course Maresca makes it a point to sub off Cherki around minute 60.
GAME 5, Porto, UCL - Persists with Cherki and Enzo double 10s (Enzo Anderson double pivot on paper). Problems of the previous game persist. Enzo gets an assist and plays all 90 minutes. Cherki gets subbed off at 60 minutes. This is now 5 games into the season and Maresca hasn't kept Cherki on the pitch all game even once. Meanwhile Enzo in City's first UCL game plays all 90. A pattern is emerging even for those who were pretending to be blind before. Onto the next match
GAME 6, THE MANCHESTER DERBY - Follows the pattern of every game since Enzo was signed, tedious play. Until? Foden gets sent off inside 25 minutes. No prizes for guessing who got subbed off at half time. Yep, Cherki. Enzo played more than 80. Of course all for the good of the team, the greater good, every injustice is always done under that pretense.
GAME 7, CARABAO CUP, Norwich City - The type of game where you rest your key players and start the players you don't really see as starters. Enzo Fernandez doesn't play a single minute. Haaland isn't even in the full squad! Reserves like Rulli start at GK. And of course Mr. Rayan Cherki starts, playing next to Samba and Allan, so you get how unseriously Maresca took the match. Gets subbed off at 45. Scores a goal in between but it's just a domestic cup game. What's more relevant is who started and who didn't.
GAME 8, SUNDERLAND, PL - The cracks begin to show
Ever since Maresca started playing Enzo and Anderson together, it was blindingly obvious that 1) Anderson would need intense physiotherapy soon for all the work he would have to do and 2) A good transition team would cut this City midfield into ribbons. Sunderland was the first real taste of it. Cherki and Enzo started, both of them scored, Enzo with a brilliant freekick. City looked shaky and conceded 3 but won 5-3 in the end. It's redundant saying it at this point, but of course Maresca subbed off Cherki and kept Enzo on all game. Up next was an interesting match.
🚨𝗡𝗘𝗪: Enzo Maresca:
"I made a mistake in the midfield selection with Rayan, Enzo and Elliot. in these type of game you need to be strong esp in the middle because they're very good. In the future, Bouaddi, Enzo and Elliot can be a solution."
