Scotland is a warning: 331 million people used drugs globally in 2024. When addiction outruns prevention, society pays the price.

More than 13,000 heroin and opioid deaths have been missed off official statistics in England and Wales, raising concerns about the impact on the government's approach to tackling addiction. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cg7d…

Readers should recall that SNP politicians claimed that setting up government run drug dens would help solve the problem. Reality - more people dead.

Maybe we should record drug deaths like the English.

Eh? this can't be right. Not now that we have Naloxone and fabulously expensive Drug Consumption rooms.

Is @theSNP taking ownership of these drug death results, or looking for a way to blame Westminster?

I'm sad to say I'm not surprised. While the SNP remain fixated on their overriding obsession with indy, vulnerable people who most need support continue to be failed. They too often pay the highest price in SNP Scotland. The consequences of indy would be considerably more severe.

Context Scotland records its primary headline drug death figures using a "drug misuse" definition, while the rest of the UK (England and Wales) uses a broader "drug poisoning" definition. How did the rest of UK do

Any mention of the english county line gangs flooding Scotland with drugs? Why aren't Westminster able to do anything about these gangs.

On the plus side, once Burnham's Ministry of Truth is up and running you won't be allowed to facts like this and if it's not reported it's not happening and thus all will be well with the world.

The arguments against legalisation become weaker by the day. Legalising & taxing drugs, that people will get and take anyway would provide money to deal with addiction, rehab, mental health and as importantly tidying of dangerous drug parafernalia like needles from public places.

Legalise and regulate drugs. Simple. Banning them and 'war on drugs' doesn't work.

Great more records broken by Honest John and the SNP. Sure why focus on important things like this when you can waste peoples like with indy refs again….

You are full of shite and propaganda. Here's a real journalist. 👇 Learn something.
And not a single word about the main supply chain? Hm. England does not merely leak drugs into Scotland. It feeds the market through two arteries that have shaped the country’s overdose crisis. The older one is wholesale. Now, for half a century Merseyside has been a warehouse for cocaine and heroin that Scottish crime groups buy by the kilo. Cash travels south on the M6 and M74, product comes back north. EncroChat files later showed the same map in messages: loads staged in London, Essex, Newcastle and Liverpool, then pointed at Glasgow. Liverpool’s importers sit closer to the ports. Glasgow’s firms sit closer to the customers. They trade rather than annex each other. The newer artery is county lines. Gangs from Liverpool, London and the West Midlands no longer sell a consignment and leave. They keep the phone, send runners up the east-coast rail line and the A9, and occupy flats in Inverness, Aberdeen and Peterhead. Police call it cuckooing. The line sells crack and heroin in towns too small to sustain a local cartel, then extracts the cash. Highland officers count a dozen such lines at a time and work with Merseyside’s Project Medusa to hit the exporters at source. When wholesale cocaine tightens, both systems starve, prices jump. Adulterants follow. Nitazenes appear in the mix that kills people in Glasgow closes and Highland bedsits alike. The English routes are not a side story. They are how a South American harvest becomes a Scottish death certificate. But what do I know... | #Scotland #England #BBCnews

Have drug deaths increased or has recording and reporting drug deaths improved? I’m not denying this is an issue, but you can’t tell me other countries record drug deaths so meticulously as Scotland…? This isn’t really a badge of pride.
