It will take nothing short of a miracle to pull us out of this era of vast unfettered stupidity.

You too suffer from high empathy and worry about the pain and suffering of fellow humans? Well, have I got a new worry for you…
UPDATE: A man used the Pain steering paper to set up an AI torture chamber in which he trapped a local model. People are mass reporting it to GitHub.

A great time to remind you that the very-consistently-reported historical average for LGBTQ ppl is 3-5% amongst the general population. Anything over that can be explained by social pressure or contagion. TLDR: this is a reversion to the mean (and a good thing).
Did not know: Identifying as LGB is falling for teens, esp 9th graders. New from @jean_twenge:

One of the most important things to remember about Donald Trump is that his beliefs are as simple as whatever he is feeling that day. It’s as simple at that.
So wrong! @BarackObama is hosting China's VP Xi Jinping today at the Pentagon with a full honor ceremony with music and cannons...

Abhorrent. A truly despicable fashion trend that can die fast enough.

Sir, this is a Wendy’s…
According to Tom Delonge this is the secret... It’s basically an AI system with biological androids (greys) deployed to manage earth, we could be an asset or resource it’s protecting from other species. The machine is an automated, cold, and amoral system that manages human populations and harvests some humans, extracts biological material whenever its programming dictates, they are routine, automated maintenance protocols built directly into the system's programming. The biological androids are made up of alien dna, humans and cattle. The AI machine manipulates human consciousness, religion, and geopolitical conflicts to keep humanity fragmented. The automated system ensures humans stay trapped in a specific technological and mental envelope so we never unite or realize our own potential. So world leaders can be possibly controlled by them dropping feelings, visions, ideas in their mind with them thinking it’s their own thoughts We are secretly developing our own defense grid to counter this ancient non-human system. Shadow agencies aren't hiding UFO tech out of malice, but because they are in a desperate, covert arms race to build electromagnetic and anti-gravity countermeasures against an automated, nonhuman control grid before it changes its operational state or before they realize what we’re doing.

I don’t know the person who posted this. But this is the single best bit of career advice, esp for the young.
People thought Mark Zuckerberg was crazy when Meta paid Alexandr Wang $5 billion to be Meta’s Chief AI Officer. At the time, the price looked outrageous. Fast-forward to today: Meta’s new AI products developed under Wang’s leadership have added roughly $200 billion in market value. Suddenly, paying billions to secure world-class talent doesn’t look quite so crazy. That’s how great entrepreneurs think. The question isn’t:” How much does this person cost?”The question is: “How much value can this person create?” If someone can help you create $10 billion in value, paying them $1 billion can be an absolute bargain. And the same principle applies if you are an employee. If you want to earn a higher salary, don’t just ask, “How can I get paid more?” Ask yourself: “ How can I create so much more value for the company that they would be happy to pay me more?” If you want to be paid $1 million a year, start thinking about how you can develop the skills, capabilities, relationships and judgment to create $10 million or more value for your company. Don’t focus only on increasing your income. Focus on increasing your value. When the value you create grows dramatically, your earning power will naturally grow with it.

Bari Weiss adding Ross Douthat to 60 Minutes was a fantastic move. Also this entire segment is gutting.
Patrick Clancy talks about the final days with his 8-month-old son, Callan. “I really thought there was a chance that Callan would live,” he tells 60 Minutes. “And remember just thinking, ‘Just gimme one. Just gimme one kid,’ and I would raise him as best I could, and I would give him the best life I possibly could. I'd tell him about his brother and sister. And I was holdin' out hope for that. And then when I got to the hospital, I saw the doctor. I saw the look on her face, and I knew that it wasn't going to be a good prognosis.” cbsn.ws/46AkLu0

Not good. At least w Google searches, we could evaluate the credibility of the source. But now, social search + LLM search is devouring traditional search from two different directions. And ppl increasingly have no appetite for respectable, sourced journalism Whoever controls these platforms will control all information—and, subsequently, the world.
An absolutely *stunning* chart via @axios on how search has collapsed as a traffic driver for legacy media

I’ve never put any stock in end times talk. I’m reevaluating that. Yes it’s been triggered by the current panic over AI. But not because it’s true. But precisely because it’s false. Across every domain (not just AI) I see the deliberate and malicious repetition of falsehoods. There is an all out war on truth. And our institutions and leaders are unable to combat it. They are often complicit in spreading the lies. There can be no flourishing of humanity in a sea of lies. This way to hell.

An absolutely shameful post from the Rep nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner.
I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.

A good point. And probably true. Buuuuuuuut… The difference here is that humans have always outsmarted and overcome the adversities present in our world—diseases, ice ages, wars, storms, etc— but we will not outsmart a malevolent artificial super-intelligence.
Earth has been around for billions of years. Humans...around 300,000. Civilization 10,000. Maybe I'm a buffoon (actually, yea I am). But I just think its safe to say that humans or the world will not end while I'm alive. Predicting the end is near is a beloved pastime of humans.

From watching Terminator as a kid to living it as an adult. Life comes at you fast. 🤖🔥
A short explanation of why AI might kill everyone: AI may soon be much smarter than humans. When it is, it will be in control. If you were put in a classroom of kindergartners, you would be the one in charge. Once AI has the robots to build and maintain everything it needs, we will become useless to it. But keeping us alive will impose enormous costs. We need clean air, water, and food. The fastest, cheapest ways to build more computing power could produce enough pollution to poison the biosphere. Humans have a reason to avoid that: we depend on the biosphere. AI won’t. Unless it values our survival, preserving the conditions we need to live will be a cost it has no reason to pay. Building what it wants as cheaply as possible would mean poisoning the biosphere and killing everyone. We’re not programming AI’s values line by line. We’re training it without really understanding what it is learning to want. We’re giving control to something we don’t understand, something that will have no intrinsic need for us, and something that will easily be able to wipe us out. This is crazy, but it’s what we’re doing, even as some of the people building AI tell us it’s crazy.

This is what happens when you’re so accustomed to the benefits of modernity - sanitation, clean food & water, low infant mortality - that you forget where it all came from, how much effort it took to build, & how bad things were before. This is the literal definition of decadence
