😱La pequeña Isla Socorro, perteneciente al archipiélago Revillagigedo será la primera víctima directa de #Polo, el monstruo Cat.5 con vientos salvajes de 285 Km/hr va en embestida directa contra la ínsula. 🇲🇽La isla mantiene un base de 50 marinos de #México. Hay que destacar que la base de Socorro está prácticamente fortificada para soportar estos fenómenos extremos.

The satellite imagery of Hurricane Polo is verging on the absolute extreme. Even though recon data shows the storm has plateaued in strength, rippling arcs of icy, -120 F (-85 C) convection and furious gravity waves have encircled a perfect velodrome of an eye. We haven’t seen anything like this in the East Pacific since Hurricane Patricia in 2015.

It looks like wind shear was slightly hindering Polo’s attempted intensification, causing the plateau (no sign of EWRC yet). Atmospheric winds may be improving now as IR satellite becomes more symmetrical and the last recon pass showed a deepening pressure (~909 mbar).

It’s very rare for a Hurricane to reach 180 MPH winds at all. It’s almost unheard of for one to reach it TWICE. That’s what Hurricane Polo just did today. Two distinct, completely separate 180 MPH peak intensity phases during completely different stages of the cyclonic life cycle. What we’re seeing take place near Mexico’s Pacific coast this week is nothing short of the meteorologically exceptional.

Flying from Mississippi to Hawaii yesterday it was mostly clear until we got about 300 miles out from the islands. Scattered clouds became a layer at 22k feet that we skimmed across the top of. Checking satellite imagery it turned out to be an extended band from Hurricane Nolo. After crossing through that there were just smaller puffy clouds that looked interesting as we landed as the sun was setting in Kauai. Time lapse below:

Hurricane Polo has re-intensified into a CATEGORY 5 monster for the 3RD time, joining Hurricane Ioke (2006) as the only Pacific Hurricanes on record to have three separate CAT 5 peaks. That was quite a flight into #Polo. With the ERC finishing it started to ramp up towards the end and we got a lot of side to side motion that made me queasier than I usually am. Should be an awesome dataset for understanding eyewall replacement cycles!
