EARTH HAS A COSMIC CLOCK. Earth's climate doesn't stay exactly the same forever. Over thousands to hundreds of thousands of years, Earth's orbit and orientation in space slowly change. These changes are called the Milankovitch cycles. There are three major cycles: ECCENTRICITY Earth's orbital shape changes from more circular to more elliptical over roughly 100,000 years. OBLIQUITY Earth's axial tilt varies between about 22.1° and 24.5° over roughly 41,000 years. PRECESSION Earth's rotational axis slowly wobbles like a spinning top over roughly 26,000 years. Together, these cycles change where and when sunlight is distributed across Earth, particularly at high latitudes. Over geological timescales, these orbital changes are an important factor in Earth's long-term climate variations and the timing of many glacial and interglacial periods. Think about the scale: Earth's orientation changes over tens of thousands of years... while a human lifetime is only a tiny moment on that clock. The planet isn't just traveling around the Sun. Google is planning to launch an experimental satellite next week to help determine if data centers could operate off of Earth. The long-term goal is to put data centers into orbit, where they would be solar-powered.

If we do have visitors, say we find an alien probe, it's similar to a cave dweller that finds a cell phone and at first thinks it's just another rock, but eventually presses buttons and realizes it's something else. It delivers a sense of humility. It delivers the message that we are not at the top of the cosmic food chain. We will have to come together and deal with this visitor. Can’t trust a single thing under this administration

If we were to have a diesel ban tomorrow, you would have a catastrophic change in prices in Texas and Louisiana, where diesel prices would go through the floor because of oversaturation. The only way to fix that is to reduce diesel runs. Suddenly, the United States has less diesel than it had before. If we get these dense concentrations of oversupply, the only way to fix that is to improve distribution. And that means product pipelines. Right now, we really only have one: the Colonial Pipeline, which takes refined fuels from the Gulf Coast up to the American Northeast. Everything else is shipped by rail or, more likely, by truck. So what you must do is build a nationwide distribution system, or maybe even mandate the creation of refineries in places where there aren't concentrations of them. Or, here's a crazy idea, maybe ship it by water and amend the Interstate Commerce Act or the Jones Act so it's easier to move stuff around the continental United States. Bans by themselves sound good because they mean that the stuff will be trapped here, but it's trapped in the wrong places. It's still a distribution problem, and a distribution problem means you must address the distribution system. Unless and until you do that, the conversation is just in the wrong place.
