All That Jazz (1979) is one of Bob Fosse’s most personal films, drawing heavily on his own life and career. Roy Scheider plays Joe Gideon, a fictionalized version of Fosse, a demanding choreographer and director balancing work, relationships and his declining health.
Scheider wasn't the first choice. Richard Dreyfuss was originally cast but left the project. Scheider later recalled that the script “blew my mind” when he first read it.
Fosse had considered playing Gideon himself, but ultimately chose Scheider because he wanted an actor who could convincingly move like a choreographer.
Ann Reinking, who had been Fosse's partner, later said he deliberately made Gideon darker than himself. Jessica Lange, meanwhile, plays the Angel of Death, a role Fosse reportedly described to her by saying, “If I had to face Death, I'd want it to be you.”
Ben Vereen's role also has an interesting story. Fosse initially brought him in for a short shoot, then called him back because he was “stuck for an ending.” That eventually became the film's famous finale.
Fosse had already suffered a serious heart attack before making the film, making its story about Gideon's health and relentless lifestyle particularly personal.
